Johannes Brahms opened his creative field of choral orchestral works with the greatest of its kind: the “German Requiem” for two soloists, four-part choir and orchestra. There were several occasions for entering public musical life as a young composer with a requiem of all things: the death of his mentor Robert Schumann; the death of his mother; but also to expand his compositional skills in great contrapuntal courses, motet-like style, chorale-like passages, song-like-melodic vocal solos as well as antiphons and responsorial sections in continuation of the old sacred music. The almost equal treatment of choir and orchestra is striking. The instrumental ensemble is also run like a second choir over long periods. The choir and orchestra of the Tiroler Festspiele Erl under the direction of the German conductor Roland Böer will grow together into a polyphonic community and dialogue partners. The two vocal soloists (in Erl Florina Ilie, soprano, Domen Križaj, baritone) are assigned individual arioso, lyrical sections in between. Brahms himself selected the biblical texts, both mourning and comforting
