"They were sonatas, more veiled symphonies," wrote Robert Schumann about the piano improvisations
of the young Johannes Brahms, prophesying "even more wonderful glimpses into the mysteries of the spirit world" when Brahms "lowered his magic wand where the powers of the masses seemed to him." , in chorus and orchestra, lend their powers". Brahms redeemed what Schumann raved about: he lifted the symphonic veil with the composition of four orchestral symphonies and also bundled the vocal and orchestral forces in symphonic choral works. It is these choral-orchestral works that complete the Brahms symphony and also his understanding of human existence, which resonates abstractly in the symphonies, and his attitude to life in the texts set to music by poets such as
Making Goethe, Schiller and Hölderlin concretely comprehensible. It is precisely this overall view that the Swiss conductor Titus Engel, the Camerata Salzburg and the choir of the Tyrolean Festival Erl open up with their cycle, in which the four symphonies are supplemented by four of the symphonic choral works.
