Engelberta
Tomaso Albinoni, prolific composer of concerts, also wrote about fifty plays; of these until recently it was believed that only Zenobia and Statira survived in complete form. Engelberta, on a libretto by the 'reformist' poets Apostolo Zeno and Pietro Pariati (but only by the former, in his Venetian guise), he made his debut in the 1709 Carnival at the Venetian theater of San Cassiano. Today the entire work, which for many years was known as the work of Francesco Gasparini, is entirely attributed to the great Venetian composer. At the center of the plot is the figure of Engelberga, wife of the Carolingian emperor Ludwig II, depicted here as a humble and credulous woman. This corresponds very little to historical reality, yet it offers the occasion for many tender and lyrical arias before her innocence triumphs in the finale.
