Introduction to the concert "in front of the museum" with Andreas Bomba at 7:00 p.m. in the Great Hall

It was a memorable museum concert on November 7, 1890 in the Frankfurt hall. Clara Schumann played a piano concerto by Frédéric Chopin, and after the break Antonín Dvorák himself conducted his new symphony, which is now counted as his eighth. He then took it with him on a trip to England, where he conducted it several times and had it published. For a long time, the Eighth was far more popular in England than on the continent, until it established itself here as one of the great symphonies by the Bohemian Romantic.
The Englishman Edward Elgar was drawn in the opposite direction to Germany several times, first in Leipzig and later in Munich and Bayreuth, to get to know the music of Richard Wagner in particular. Back on the island, he developed his very own British style, which culminated in the great Cello Concerto from 1919 and at the same time came to a melancholy conclusion. After the death of his wife Caroline Alice in the same year and the demise of a humanistic and cosmopolitan world in World War I, he stopped composing.
A work by Elgar was also on the program when Ralph Vaughan Williams' Tallis Fantasy premiered in 1920. In it he draws on a theme by the Renaissance composer Thomas Tallis and thus ties in with the spirit of the early English musical tradition, which he - like Elgar - revived and continued.

Es war ein denkwürdiges Museumskonzert, an jenem 7. November 1890 im Frankfurter Saalbau. Clara Schumann spielte ein Klavierkonzert von Frédéric Chopin, und nach der Pause dirigierte Antonín Dvorák höchstselbst seine neue Sinfonie, die heute als seine achte gezählt wird. Anschließend nahm er sie mit auf eine Englandreise, wo er sie mehrfach dirigierte und auch verlegen ließ. So war die Achte lange Zeit in England weitaus populärer als auf dem Kontinent, bis sie sich auch hier als eine der großen Sinfonien des böhmischen Romantikers etablierte.
Den Engländer Edward Elgar zog es in umgekehrter Richtung mehrfach nach Deutschland, um zunächst in Leipzig und später in München und Bayreuth vor allem die Musik Richard Wagners kennenzulernen. Zurück auf der Insel, entwickelte er seinen ganz eigenen britischen Stil, der im großartigen Cellokonzert aus dem Jahre 1919 seinen Höhepunkt und zugleich melancholischen Abschluss fand. Nach dem Tode seiner Frau Caroline Alice im selben Jahr und dem Untergang einer humanistischen und kosmopolitischen Welt im Ersten Weltkrieg komponierte er nicht mehr.
Ein Werk von Elgar stand auch auf dem Programm, als die Tallis-Fantasie von Ralph Vaughan Williams 1920 uraufgeführt wurde. In ihr greift er auf ein Thema des Renaissance-Komponisten Thomas Tallis zurück und knüpft damit an den Geist der frühen englischen Musiktradition an, die er – ebenso wie Elgar – wiederbelebte und fortführte.
