I myself wrote a new drama. Greek form, Christian spirit, eternal content […]. A drama about suffering: "Job".

This is what the twenty-year-old Karol Wojtyła wrote about his work in 1940 in a letter to his friend - Mieczysław Kotlarczyk. The young playwright read the Old Testament tale about innocent suffering and the steadfastness of faith from a Christological perspective, and saw its parallel with the fate of war-plunged Poland.

The opera by Krzesimir Dębski, based on the text of this play, is full of bold juxtapositions of archaising language with modern orchestral means and an interesting sound of the choir, commenting - as in a Greek tragedy - just like in a Greek tragedy. It is significant that the premiere of the work, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was postponed twice, and finally took place in April 2021 - however, online, without the participation of the public. Only during the 5th Festival of the Polish Royal Opera, fans of the genre will have the opportunity to admire the opera live in the theater. All these difficult circumstances seem to strengthen the universal message of the work. It is, as the composer himself emphasizes: "an opera [...] about the fate of a man who has fallen into misfortunes and then emerges from this fall".

Ja sam napisałem dramat nowy. Grecki formą, chrześcijański duchem, odwieczny treścią […]. Dramat o cierpieniu: „Hiob”.

Tak o swym dziele pisał w 1940 roku dwudziestoletni Karol Wojtyła w liście do przyjaciela – Mieczysława Kotlarczyka. Młody dramaturg odczytał starotestamentową opowieść o niezawinionym cierpieniu oraz niezłomności wiary z perspektywy chrystologicznej i dostrzegł jej paralelę z losami pogrążonej w wojennej pożodze Polski.

W opartej na tekście tej sztuki operze Krzesimira Dębskiego nie brak śmiałych zestawień archaizującego języka z nowoczesnymi środkami orkiestrowymi i ciekawym brzmieniem komentującego – niczym w greckiej tragedii – chóru. Znamienne, że premiera dzieła, ze względu na pandemię COVID-19 została dwukrotnie odłożona, ostatecznie zaś odbyła się w kwietniu 2021 roku – jednak w wersji online, bez udziału publiczności. Dopiero podczas V Festiwalu Polskiej Opery Królewskiej miłośnicy gatunku będą mieli okazję podziwiać operę na żywo w teatrze. Te wszystkie trudne okoliczności wydają się wzmacniać uniwersalny przekaz dzieła. Jest to bowiem, jak podkreśla sam kompozytor: „opera […] o losie człowieka, który wpadł w nieszczęścia, a potem wydobywa się z tego upadku”.
