The pursuit of imperishable beauty is at the heart of Georg Friedriech Handel's secular oratorio. Between time and truth, between beauty and pleasure, a competition breaks out for the true content and true beauty of life. Even if the title clarifies the outcome of this competition, the question remains whether beauty must succumb to time.

The allegories of time, truth, pleasure and beauty compete against each other. In the struggle for identity and fulfillment, a moral drama unfolds around Jene. Handel's music gives each individual allegory a deep humanity and allows characters to emerge in pictorial intimacy.

The first version of the entertaining oratorio was written in Rome in 1707 with the text by Cardinal Benedetto Pamphili. It was later performed in London in 1737, with the play being significantly expanded and reworked. Our performance is based on the English version of the oratorio from 1757.
