For the first time, the play “Emperor of Atlantis” by V. Ullman will be presented on the stage of the Moscow Opera House, which will become the first full-fledged directorial work of GITIS graduate, director Vadim Letunov. Elena Sosulnikova is responsible for the musical part, who will also be staging the performance as a conductor for the first time. Together with them on the team are an experienced master, production designer Rostislav Protasov, lighting designer Vladislav Alexandrov and choreographer Ksenia Lisanskaya.

Viktor Ullman, a famous Czech composer of Jewish origin, a student of Schoenberg, wrote the opera “Emperor of Atlantis” in Terezin two years before his death in a gas chamber. The history of its creation and resurrection is no less tragic than the era in which the author lived... Victor Ullman was deported to Theresienstadt - a “model camp” for Jews, which the Nazis organized in the Czech fortress of Terezin - in September 1942. During his two years there, the composer wrote more than 20 works, including the opera “Emperor of Atlantis.” According to Ullmann, this opera is about “life that has forgotten how to laugh. And about death, which has forgotten how to cry, in a world that has forgotten how to enjoy life and die from death.” However, it seemed so satirical that it was banned by Nazi censors and filmed after the dress rehearsal.

In October 1944, the composer and his family, as well as the librettist of The Emperor of Atlantis, 25-year-old poet Peter Kien, were sent to Auschwitz and died in the gas chamber. The composer gave the opera score to a ghetto librarian who survived the war. It was discovered in 1975 and since then it has been installed all over the world.

On May 10, 2024, the premiere of V. Ullman’s opera “Emperor of Atlantis” will take place on the stage of the White Column Hall of Princess Shakhovskaya. The premiere episode will run until May 12.

Впервые на сцене оперного театра в Москве будет представлен спектакль «Император Атлантиды» В. Ульмана, который станет первой полноценной режиссерской работой выпускника ГИТИСа, режиссера Вадима Летунова. За музыкальную часть отвечает Елена Сосульникова, которая также впервые будет ставить спектакль как дирижер. Вместе с ними в команде – опытный мастер, художник-постановщик Ростислав Протасов, художник по свету Владислав Александров и хореограф Ксения Лисанская.

Оперу «Император Атлантиды» Виктор Ульман, известный чешский композитор еврейского происхождения, ученик Шенберга, написал в Терезине за два года до своей гибели в газовой камере. История ее создания и воскрешения не менее трагична, чем эпоха, в которой жил автор… Виктор Ульман был депортирован в Терезиенштадт – «образцовый лагерь» для евреев, который нацисты организовали в чешской крепости Терезин –  в сентябре 1942 года.  За два года пребывания там композитор написал более 20 произведений, в том числе и оперу «Император Атлантиды». По словам Ульмана, эта опера о «жизни, которая разучилась смеяться. И о смерти, которая разучилась плакать, в мире, разучившемся радоваться от жизни и умирать от смерти». Впрочем, она казалась настолько сатирической, что была запрещена нацистской цензурой и снята после генеральной репетиции.

В октябре 1944 года композитор и его семья, а также либреттист «Императора Атлантиды» 25-летний поэт Петер Кин были отправлены в Аушвиц и погибли в газовой камере.  Партитуру оперы композитор передал библиотекарю гетто, который пережил войну. Она была обнаружена в 1975 году и с тех пор ее ставят по всему миру.

10 мая 2024 года состоится премьера оперы В. Ульмана «Император Атлантиды» на сцене Белоколонного зала княгини Шаховской. Премьерная серия продлится до 12 мая.
