La favorita - Intervista al Direttore Matteo Beltrami

La storia della Favorita è una storia di ruoli e di personaggi, delle differenze sociali tra questi e delle dinamiche affettive e di potere che li regolano. I ruoli e i personaggi sono il centro drammaturgico più importante. Poco importa in realtà il contesto storico o geografico della vicenda: contano le relazioni tra i protagonisti e dunque lo spazio fortemente simbolico e significativo ove tutto si svolge e prenda vita. La verità dei personaggi è nascosta dal loro ruolo e dunque dal costume che li protegge, impedendo loro di essere sé stessi. Il coro ha una funzione essenziale di commento all’azione, come se fosse spettatore, distaccato ma presente, di un teatro (nel senso filologico del termine riferito all’azione del guardare) rappresentato da Fernando, Alfonso, Leonora. E dunque dobbiamo andare a scoprire la verità nascosta dietro ai costumi dei personaggi, che impongono un ruolo nella società e che rappresentano una specie di corazza ai sentimenti, ma anche una protezione rispetto alla collocazione sociale.
Siamo partiti dunque dall’idea del teatro anatomico, luogo dove si esaminano profondamente (fisicamente) gli individui e che qui vorremmo riproporre come analisi e disamina dei sentimenti, delle viscere affettive dei personaggi, del loro essere veri sotto una pelle (rappresentata dal costume) che solo quando viene tolta li lascia sinceramente esprimere ciò che sentono, provano, vivono, mostrandoci i loro sentimenti, la loro sofferenza, la loro angoscia, il loro amore, la loro verità.
Poco importa a dire il vero se è Spagna e se è il 1340: ciò che conta è la dinamica drammatica raccontata allo spettatore (e dunque anche al coro che ha questa funzione in scena).
Lo spazio è quel teatro anatomico cui accennavo poco sopra, il luogo dell’autopsia dei corpi (e nel nostro caso dei sentimenti), con un centro di azione, una sorta di agone drammatico, osservato dalle tribune ove prende posto il coro che è spettatore e giudice delle storie che vengono analizzate. Lo spazio diventa così tutti i luoghi di cui la storia ha bisogno: convento, palazzo, giardino, chiesa ed anche spazio della memoria e dell’espressione dei sentimenti. E tutto acquisisce senso e valore grazie ai costumi (la pelle che sta sui personaggi) e all’attrezzeria che ci rivela dove ci troviamo e ci aiuta quale strumento di analisi.
Il tavolo del teatro, quello che stava al centro, è per noi una cassa, un armadio, una teca, un baule, dentro al quale sono custoditi i costumi e gli accessori che occorrono a completarlo. Non tutto, ma gli elementi più significativi del costume, che i personaggi indossano per nascondere la verità del loro essere e sentirsi protetti, ma anche infastiditi dall’uso del costume stesso (come Fernando nella prima scena).
Il costume permette ai personaggi di essere al sicuro finché non devono rivelarsi per ciò che sono. Fernando all’inizio dell’opera rifiuta il costume da religioso per essere se stesso. Incontra Leonora che però ha il costume da Favorita e che le permette di collocarsi nella società ed essere amante del re. Il re ha il costume che gli attribuisce potere e forza, lo stesso potere e la stessa autorità che Baldassarre trae dal proprio. Fernando usa il costume da soldato per essere abilitato agli occhi del re e dunque di Leonora. E così via. Ma quando alla fine, nonostante Leonora si nasconda dentro al costume da novizio per poter incontrare Fernando, i personaggi si rivelano per ciò che sono, senza costume e si dichiarano amore: la loro protezione viene meno e si ritrovano nudi, soccombendo, davanti ai loro sentimenti, alla verità dei fatti. Una situazione che per Leonora, fragile, ormai è insostenibile, essendo stata da sempre protetta dal ruolo che ha avuto fino a quel momento.
La scena è dunque funzionale allo svolgersi delle azioni, introducendo via via elementi che servano al racconto e allo svolgersi della vicenda, per permettere anche agli spettatori/coro (e dunque allo spettatore in breve) di comprendere meglio la vicenda ed il contesto.
Il costume è neutro quando i personaggi agiscono e si mostrano per quello che sono e si arricchisce degli elementi (storicizzati) dei costumi che permettono loro di essere il personaggio richiesto.
Ci interessa così analizzare minuziosamente, come avviene per un corpo nel teatro anatomico, la storia tra i personaggi, le dinamiche dei loro comportamenti, la sintesi dei loro sentimenti.
È assolutamente affascinante capire come, per mantenere una credibilità e un ruolo sociale, il costume intervenga sulle persone e che valore semantico questo ricopra nella drammaturgia e come lo spazio, che non è orpello o di contorno, diventi in realtà spazio vivo e vitale dell’agire analitico di chi assiste alle vicende rappresentate.

The roles and characters are the most important dramaturgical center. In reality, the historical or geographical context of the story matters little: the relationships between the protagonists count and therefore the highly symbolic and significant space where everything takes place and comes to life. The truth of the characters is hidden by their role and therefore by the costume that protects them, preventing them from being themselves. The choir has an essential function of commenting on the action, as if it were a spectator, detached but present, of a theater (in the philological sense of the term referring to the action of looking) represented by Fernando, Alfonso, Leonora. And therefore we must go and discover the truth hidden behind the costumes of the characters,
We therefore started from the idea of ​​the anatomical theater, a place where individuals are deeply examined (physically) and which we would like to re-propose here as an analysis and examination of the feelings, of the affective bowels of the characters, of their being true under a skin (represented by the costume). that only when it is removed does it allow them to sincerely express what they feel, feel, experience, showing us their feelings, their suffering, their anguish, their love, their truth.
To tell the truth, it matters little if it is Spain and if it is 1340: what matters is the dramatic dynamics told to the spectator (and therefore also to the choir that has this function on stage).
The space is that anatomical theater I mentioned above, the place of the autopsy of the bodies (and in our case of the feelings), with a center of action, a sort of dramatic battle, observed from the stands where the choir that is spectator takes place and judge of the stories that are analyzed. The space thus becomes all the places that history needs: convent, palace, garden, church and also a space for memory and for the expression of feelings. And everything acquires meaning and value thanks to the costumes (the skin on the characters) and the tools that reveal where we are and help us as an analysis tool.
The theater table, the one that stood in the center, is for us a chest, a wardrobe, a display case, a trunk, inside which the costumes and accessories needed to complete it are kept. Not all, but the most significant elements of the costume, which the characters wear to hide the truth of their being and feel protected, but also annoyed by the use of the costume itself (like Fernando in the first scene).
The costume allows the characters to be safe until they have to reveal themselves for who they are. At the beginning of the work Fernando refuses the religious costume to be himself. He meets Leonora who, however, has the costume of a Favorita and which allows her to place herself in society and be the king's lover. The king has the costume that gives him power and strength, the same power and authority that Belshazzar draws from his own. Fernando uses the soldier's costume to be qualified in the eyes of the king and therefore of Leonora. And so on. But when in the end, despite Leonora hiding inside the novice costume to be able to meet Fernando, the characters reveal themselves for what they are, without costume and declare love: their protection fails and they find themselves naked, succumbing, in front of their feelings, to the truth of the facts.
The scene is therefore functional to the unfolding of the actions, gradually introducing elements that serve the story and the unfolding of the story, to allow also the spectators / chorus (and therefore the spectator in short) to better understand the story and the context.
The costume is neutral when the characters act and show themselves for what they are and is enriched with the (historicized) elements of the costumes that allow them to be the required character.
We are thus interested in analyzing in detail, as happens for a body in anatomical theater, the story between the characters, the dynamics of their behavior, the synthesis of their feelings.
It is absolutely fascinating to understand how, in order to maintain a credibility and a social role, the costume intervenes on people and what semantic value this holds in dramaturgy and how the space, which is not frill or contour, actually becomes the living and vital space of ' analytical action of those who witness the events represented.
