Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil: Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, op. 67 Beethoven (+3 More)

Every year, the Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil (OSJ) commissions a piece that is presented as a world premiere. Teatro São Luiz has been the stage for many of these premieres, which have allowed many Portuguese composers to see their works interpreted by a symphony orchestra in a hall such as this one. This year, the OSJ invites Christopher Bochmann, a Portuguese-British composer with a long list of works for almost all genres and numerous arrangements and orchestrations. “In 2002 I wrote the piece Lupercalia for large orchestra, based on the practices of that holiday from the times of ancient Rome. Quinquatria adds another in a series of four pieces, which refer to the festivals of ancient Rome: Quinquatria, a festival dedicated to the goddess Minerva, included moments of ceremony, fighting between gladiators and poetry contests. Also referred to are the flutes of another festival dedicated to the same goddess”, writes Bochmann, who has lived and worked in Lisbon since 1980 and has conducted the OSJ in hundreds of concerts and, with it, recorded four CDs with his works.

Over the last decades, the OSJ has trained many orchestral instrumentalists, introduced many young soloists to the public and taken its action on behalf of Musical culture all over the country. It is, therefore, recognised as a fundamental institution in our musical-pedagogical panorama, being the only youth symphony orchestra with permanent activity, playing a pivotal role in the training of musicians, in a perspective of high-level improvement and professionalisation.

A Orquestra Sinfónica Juvenil (OSJ) encomenda, todos os anos, uma peça que apresenta em estreia mundial. O Teatro São Luiz tem sido palco de muitas destas estreias, que têm permitido a muitos compositores portugueses verem as suas obras interpretadas por uma orquestra sinfónica numa sala como esta. Este ano, a OSJ convida Christopher Bochmann, compositor luso-britânico, detentor de uma ampla lista de obras para quase todos os géneros e de numerosos arranjos e orquestrações. “Em 2002 escrevi a peça Lupercalia para grande orquestra, baseada nas práticas daquele feriado dos tempos da Roma antiga. Quinquatria acrescenta mais uma, numa série de quatro peças, que se referem às festas da Roma antiga: Quinquatria, festival dedicado à deusa Minerva, incluía momentos de cerimónia, de luta entre gladiadores e concursos de poesia. Também referido são as flautas de outro festival dedicado à mesma deusa”, escreve Bochmann, que vive e trabalha em Lisboa desde 1980 e já dirigiu a OSJ em centenas de concertos e, com ela, gravou quatro CDs com obras suas.

Ao longo das últimas décadas, a OSJ formou muitos instrumentistas de orquestras, deu a conhecer ao público muitos jovens solistas e levou a sua ação em favor da cultura musical a todo o país. É, por isso, reconhecida como uma instituição fundamental no nosso panorama músico-pedagógico, sendo a única orquestra sinfónica de jovens com atividade permanente, desempenhando um papel fulcral na formação de músicos, numa perspetiva de aperfeiçoamento de alto nível e profissionalização.
