"Now I started writing something nice. That will be our life in it. It will be called "Love Letters". I think it will sound adorable.' 
The quartet for two violins, viola and cello "Confidential Lists" was composed during January and February 1928, i.e. in the last year of Leoš Janáček's life (1854–1928), shortly before the creation of Bartók's 4th String Quartet. The composition is a celebration of the composer's muse and friend Kamila Stösslova. In one of his numerous letters, he wrote to her about the beginnings of work on a new composition: "Now I have begun to write something nice. That will be our life in it. It will be called "Love Letters". I think it will sound adorable. After all, we had enough of our nice events! These will be the fires in my soul and ignite it into the most beautiful melodies. … The whole will hold a special tool. It's called viola d'amour – viola of love.”

Teď začal jsem psát něco pěkného. To bude náš život v tom. Bude se to jmenovat „Milostné dopisy“. Myslím, že to bude rozkošně znět.“ 
Kvartet pro dvoje housle, violu a cello „Listy důvěrné“ byl zkomponován během ledna a února roku 1928, tedy v posledním roce života Leoše Janáčka (1854–1928), krátce před vznikem Bartókova 4. smyčcového kvartetu. Kompozice je oslavou skladatelovy múzy a přítelkyně Kamily Stösslové. V jednom z četných dopisů jí o počátcích práce na nové skladbě napsal: „Teď začal jsem psát něco pěkného. To bude náš život v tom. Bude se to jmenovat „Milostné dopisy“. Myslím, že to bude rozkošně znět. Vždyť těch našich milých příhod bylo už dost! To budou ohníčky v mé duši a rozpálí ji do nejkrásnějších melodií. … Celek bude držet obzvláštní nástroj. Jmenuje se viola d´amour – viola lásky.“
