The Queen of Spades by Pyotr Tchaikovsky is a hallmark of the Russian operatic heritage, one of the few Russian-language operas that have gained a foothold in the international repertoire. Love and excitement, a fatal mystery and a passion sacrificing a quiet life - Pushkin's story, written in the style of a secular anecdote, on the opera stage turned into a tragedy from Catherine's time, which shocks with the psychological veracity of reproducing the thoughts and feelings of the characters, their hopes, suffering and death, the brightness of the pictures era.

Tchaikovsky's opera has become a new word not only in the work of the composer himself, but also in the development of the entire Russian opera. None of the Russian composers has ever been able to achieve such a force of dramatic impact and depth of penetration into the most hidden corners of the human soul, to reveal the complex world of the subconscious, unconsciously driving our actions and deeds.

A mystical and gloomy story about a destructive obsession with three cards received almost a dozen productions at SATOB: it was staged in 1932, 1934, 1937, 1947, 1951, 1958, 1967, 1976 and 1990, with the director of the last performance being the theater's chief choreographer Igor Chernyshev. The current production by Mikhail Pandzhavidze was nominated for the Russian National Award "Golden Mask" as the best opera of its season, and director Mikhail Pandzhavidze, conductor Alexander Anisimov, Irina Krikunova (performer of the part of Lisa) and Mikhail Gubsky (performer of the part of Herman) competed for awards in private nominations .
