Prometeem, všeobecně považovaným za jeden z vrcholů poválečného hudebního divadla, se dovršilo Nonovo bádání započaté koncem sedmdesátých let: ptal se při něm po smyslu hudební tvorby a všeobecně po cíli umění, přičemž po bojovných „angažovaných“ letech přešel k meditativnímu oproštění od expresivních nástrojů a hudebního obsahu. Prometeo není operou v tradičním slova smyslu, jde spíše o sekvenci devíti kantát. Tomu také odpovídá autorova představa tohoto opusu jako výzvy, abychom nic nepřijímali jako předem dané. Cílem libreta Massima Cacciariho není jednoduše odvyprávět Prométheův příběh, nýbrž jej v rámci jednotlivých autonomních segmentů evokovat prostřednictvím hustého pletiva trojjazyčných citací. Jednotlivé části odkazují k antickému divadlu a kvantovanému, těkavému vnímání (prolog, mezihry, stasima, ostrovy). Nono na tomto základě vytvořil aranžmá neslýchaných, znepokojivých, pohyblivých, pohlcujících zvuků, které často hraničí s tichem a jsou živě elektronicky manipulovány. Cílem je učinit prostor hmatatelným, a za tímto účelem eliminuje Prometeo přímý a konvenční vztah k dramatické složce. Ta je rozdrobena mezi recitované party, chór a sólisty, přičemž texty nikdy nejsou vyslovovány ani zpívány konvenčně – jako bychom měli co do činění se zásadně přetvořenou formou renesanční polyfonie. Dramatickou složku tedy obstarávají zvuky, nikoli herci nebo postavy. Pod pojmem „poslechové tragédie“ či „tragédie slyšení“ (tragedia dell’ascolto) si máme představit schopnost postihnout dění odehrávající se v jedinečném, neopakovatelném okamžiku; jsme stále znovu vyzýváni, abychom překonali meze svého omezeného vědění a nebrali nic za dané.

Prometheus , generally considered one of the pinnacles of post-war musical theater ,  completed  Non's research that began in the late 1970s: he asked about the meaning of music creation and the goal of art in general, while after the combative  "engaged" years  he moved to a meditative liberation from expressive instruments and musical content . Prometheus it is not an opera in the traditional sense, but rather a sequence of nine cantatas. This also corresponds to the author's idea of ​​this opus as a challenge not to take anything for granted. The goal of Massimo Cacciari's libretto is not simply to tell Prometheus' story, but rather to evoke it within the individual autonomous segments through a dense network of trilingual quotations. Individual parts refer to ancient theater and quantized, volatile perception (prologue, interludes, stasima, islands). On this basis, Nono created an arrangement of unheard, disturbing, moving, absorbing sounds, often bordering on silence, and live electronically manipulated. The goal is to make space tangible, and to that end he eliminates  Prometeo direct and conventional relation to the dramatic component. This is fragmented between recited parts, chorus and soloists, with the texts never spoken or sung conventionally – as if we were dealing with a fundamentally reshaped form of Renaissance polyphony. So the dramatic component is provided by the sounds, not the actors or the characters. Under the term "tragedy of listening" or "tragedy of hearing" (tragedia dell'ascolto) we should imagine the ability to affect events taking place in a unique, unrepeatable moment; we are challenged again and again to push the limits of our limited knowledge and take nothing for granted.
