Paradise is an immaterial, evanescent, shining space / world divided into nine heavens. Reason is not enough to reach it, but Grace is necessary, a divine and luminous reason, then mystical contemplation. The journey is a progressive learning - an itinerary of the mind of God -, a constant search for the enlightened truth. In the Laudi alla Vergine, the third piece of the Four Sacred Pieces composed by Verdi in 1886, the true encounter between the Maestro and the Supreme Poet takes place. The text of the holy oration of St. Bernard from the last canto of Paradise is sung by a chorus of female voices, without accompaniment, with pure sonic transparency, according to that chaste sobriety of classical polyphony that the last Verdi pointed to as a destination for music. Italian, teaching by example how we can really progress by returning to the ancient.
