One of Britain’s finest baritones joins the Maxwells for this wonderful afternoon of English music in Dirleton’s historic kirk. Elgar’s Piano Quintet (1919) is a product of his unexpected burst of chamber music composition at the end of WWI. A major work, too little known, it has a first movement that surprised Elgar himself: “it’s strange music I think, and I like it – but it’s ghostly stuff.” Vaughan Williams’s Mystical Songs are much more often performed – a rare chance to hear his chamber arrangement.
