Conductor Somtow Sucharitkul introduced his first complete Mahler Cycle to audiences in Thailand with the Fifth in 2009.  Now he is embarking on a second complete cycle using young performers.  The Siam Sinfonietta have so far played No. 1, 3, 4, 6, 7 and 9 an, collaborating with the Siam Philharmonic, also No. 2 and 8.  With No. 5, therefore, Siam Sinfonietta in its thirteenth season hits another milestone.  In 2010 Somtow was awarded a precious relic by members of the International Mahler Society: the baton used by Leonard Bernstein at his last recording of Mahler's Ninth.
