Often called “the Beethoven of our time,” Penderecki was a prolific composer throughout his life. He also left an indelible mark on the GSO’s history and development. This concert features three of his works: the Adagietto arranged for English horn and string orchestra from Paradise Lost, which the composer referred to as a “sacred representation” rather than an opera; his Double Concerto for Violin, Viola and Orchestra and his Symphony No.6 (Chinese Poems), a co-commission by the GSO and Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra. Penderecki was inspired by Chinese traditional culture, setting classic German translations of ancient Chinese poems.

潘德列茨基大师有“当代贝多芬”的美誉，大师一生笔耕不辍，且在广交艺术发展史上留下浓墨重彩印记。本场音乐会上演他的三首作品：歌剧与清唱剧混合式作品《失乐园》中《小柔板》，由英国管与弦乐队演绎的改编版本，为小提琴、中提琴和交响乐队而作的协奏曲以及由广州交响乐团与德国德累斯顿爱乐乐团联合委约的《第六交响曲（中国诗歌）》，潘德列茨基从中国传统文化中汲取灵感，并采用德文版中国古典诗词作为歌词文本创作了这部《第六交响曲（中国诗歌）》。
