The protecting veil is ongetwijfeld de meest bekende instrumentale compositie van John Tavener (1944-2013). Hij schreef dit 45 minuten durende werk voor cello en strijkers in 1987 in opdracht van cellist Steven Isserlis. Het is erg uitdagend voor de solist die zo goed als geen rust wordt gegund en heel vaak de hoogste registers van zijn instrument moet opzoeken. Het werk is opgevat als een reeks iconen die reflecteren over het leven van de Moeder Gods en is zoals veel andere composities van Tavener doordrongen van spiritualiteit en sereniteit. 

Het Britse muziekmagazine Gramophone prees cellist Matthew Barley om zijn interpretatie: “Barley has absolutely understood that intimacy is what underlies this piece: it is certainly on a large scale but it is also a kind of personal dialogue between the composer and the life of the Mother of God.”

Violiste en Elisabethwedstrijdlaureate Sylvia Huang is als soliste te horen in twee andere composities van Tavener met een religieuze inspiratiebron: Fragment for the Virgin en Tears of the angels. Dat Young Belgian Strings een uitmuntend strijkersensemble is, blijkt ook nu weer onder de bezielende leiding van Dirk Van de Moortel.
