There's nothing predictable or conventional about Mehta's Mahler, and Thomas Quasthoff's performance is as always rich in contrasts. The opening of this concert recording is truly imposing. Webern's demanding orchestration and Strauss' Zarathustra follow, and the Staatskapelle Dresden handles them masterfully with their familiar luxurious tone.
