Staged in Vienna on 30 December 1905,  La vedova allegra  is set in Paris and has as its protagonist Hanna Glawari, a rich widow of Pontevedro (a name that hardly hides Montenegro), whom her compatriots would like to have remarried at home to avoid relocation. abroad of its huge assets. They will succeed - at the end of a score dominated by time in three quarters of the waltz -, thanks to an old flame of her, Danilo, namesake of the son of Nicholas I, king of Montenegro (further detail in support of irredentist interpretations of the  Merry Widow). "This is not music!" it was the judgment of the director of the theater An der Wien on the operetta, which however failed to cloud its success: so much so that Lehár wanted that very same phrase engraved on the medal that celebrated its two hundredth replica.
