Triumph of Spirit over Matter is een komedie over kunst. De opera vertelt het verhaal van Beck, de kunstenaar die geen succes kent. Uit wanhoop verkoopt hij kopieën, en plots ligt hij in de markt.

Als zijn bedrog ontdekt wordt, is hij zelfs wereldberoemd. Zo is zijn succes ook een wraakactie : vooral op de galeriehouder omdat hij hem niet kan overtuigen van zijn kwaliteit. De enige onvoorwaardelijke steun vindt Beck bij Elsie, de vrouw die blindelings in zijn talent gelooft en bereid is om alles te doen om de reputatie van haar geliefde kunstenaar te vestigen. De opera voert ons binnen in de wondere, verwrongen wereld van het kunstbedrijf. Het biedt echter geen cynische kijk, daarom sluiten de gebeurtenissen te dicht aan bij de wereld zoals we hem kennen. Zo ontstaat kunst, zo bloeit de schoonheid open, en alle anekdotes zijn dan plots van geen belang meer.

Met Triumph of Spirit over Matter schrijft Wim Henderickx zijn eerste opera. Henderickx’ muziek wordt gekenmerkt door een solide bouw, wisselende kleursonoriteiten en een intense expressiekracht. Aanvankelijk kenmerkten zijn partituren zich door de atonale schrijfwijze van de Tweede Weense School en door de obsederende ritmiek die we ook bij Stravinsky aantreffen. De laatste jaren wordt hij sterk beïnvloed door niet-westerse culturen, inzonderheid de Oosterse. Aan zijn eerste opera werkte hij lang en intensief, samen met librettist Johan Thielemans die eerder met componist Jan Van Vlijmen libretto schreef voor de Van Gogh-opera Un Malheureux vétu de Noir.

"Ik schreef deze opera als jonge dertiger in opdracht van Muziektheater Transparant en Theatergroep Hollandia. De voorstelling - op een nieuw libretto van Johan Thielemans en in een regie van Johan Simons - was een coproductie met De Munt, deSingel, Ars Musica en Brussel 2000. Guy Coolen en Bernard Foucrouille, warme persoonlijkheden met een groot hart, gaven me alle ruimte en vertrouwen die ik nodig had. De bevrijding en voldoening die ik voelde toen de première bijzonder warm onthaald werd door het publiek in de Munt, was hartverwarmend. Deze ervaring was een schitterende start voor mijn latere opdrachtwerken voor opera en muziektheater."

Triumph of Spirit over Matter is a comedy about art. The opera tells the story of Beck, the unsuccessful artist. Out of desperation he sells copies, and suddenly he is in the market.

When his deception is discovered, he is even world famous. His success is also an act of revenge: especially on the gallery owner because he cannot convince him of his quality. The only unconditional support Beck finds with Elsie, the woman who blindly believes in his talent and is willing to do anything to establish the reputation of her beloved artist. The opera takes us into the wonderful, twisted world of the art business. However, it does not offer a cynical view, which is why the events are too close to the world as we know it. This is how art is created, beauty blossoms, and all anecdotes are suddenly of no importance anymore.

Wim Henderickx writes his first opera with Triumph of Spirit over Matter . Henderickx' music is characterized by a solid construction, changing color sonorities and an intense expressiveness. Initially, his scores were characterized by the atonal writing style of the Second Viennese School and by the obsessive rhythm that we also find in Stravinsky. In recent years he has been strongly influenced by non-Western cultures, especially Eastern cultures. He worked long and intensively on his first opera, together with librettist Johan Thielemans, who previously wrote librettos with composer Jan Van Vlijmen for the Van Gogh opera Un Malheureux vétu de Noir .

"I wrote this opera in my early thirties, commissioned by Muziektheater Transparant and Theatergroep Hollandia. The performance - to a new libretto by Johan Thielemans and directed by Johan Simons - was a co-production with De Munt, deSingel, Ars Musica and Brussels 2000. Guy Coolen and Bernard Foucrouille, warm personalities with a big heart, gave me all the space and confidence I needed.The liberation and satisfaction I felt when the premiere was received particularly warmly by the public at La Monnaie was heartwarming. was a wonderful start for my later commissions for opera and music theatre."
