‘Ach mijn vriend, hoe kan ik over details spreken als het hele ding wanstaltig is?’ Pjotr Tsjaikovski kreeg het zwaar te verduren toen hij zijn Eerste pianoconcert voorspeelde aan Nikolai Rubinstein. Later zag de pianist de grote kwaliteiten van het werk in - niet voor niets is het een van de meest geliefde pianoconcerten. Fenomenaal hoe Tsjaikovski het eerste deel opbouwt uit Franse, Russische en Oekraïense volkswijsjes. Een mooie showcase voor de Venezolaanse pianiste Gabriela Montero! 

Ook de Derde symfonie van Mieczysław Weinberg is opgebouwd rond – in dit geval Wit-Russische en Poolse – volksmelodieën. Vooral in de knappe orkestratie is hier ook Weinbergs verwantschap met zijn goede vriend Dmitri Sjostakovitsj te horen. Pas jaren na zijn dood in 1996 beginnen we Weinbergs muziek, zeker in het Westen, op waarde te schatten. Na grootheden als Sjostakovitsj en Gidon Kremer is de Litouwse dirigente Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla een van de belangrijkste voorvechters. Ook voor de compromisloze muziek van haar landgenote Raminta Šerkšnytė breekt ze graag een lans.

"Alas, my friend, how can I speak of details when the whole thing is disfigured?" Pyotr Tchaikovsky had a hard time playing his Piano Concerto No. 1 to Nikolai Rubinstein. Later, the pianist recognized the great qualities of the work - it is not for nothing that it is one of the most beloved piano concertos. Phenomenal how Tchaikovsky builds up the first movement from French, Russian and Ukrainian folk tunes. A beautiful showcase for the Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero! 

Mieczysław Weinberg 's Third Symphony is also built around – in this case Belarusian and Polish – folk melodies. Weinberg's kinship with his good friend Dmitri Shostakovich can also be heard here, especially in the clever orchestration. Only years after his death in 1996 do we begin to appreciate Weinberg's music, especially in the West. After greats such as Shostakovich and Gidon Kremer, the Lithuanian conductor Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla is one of the most important champions. She also likes to stand up for the uncompromising music of her compatriot Raminta Šerkšnytė.
