“Violeta Parra is a legend. Her life, her work, the character she was continue to fascinate the public fifty years after her tragic death. She traveled all over Chile in search of forgotten folk songs, becoming the tireless ambassador of a popular culture without artifice. She learned everything on her own: to sing, to write, to play the harp and the guitar. Her raw voice forever marked the history of Latin American song, and well beyond: without Violeta, no Joan Baez, no Bob Dylan! She invented and distributed what would revolutionize popular music in the 1960s: folk. Violeta, these are songs of absolute beauty: Volver a los 17, Segun el favor delviento ... and the international anthem that has become Gracias a la vida. Son of Chileans, I have always been rocked by the songs of Violeta Parra; I know them by heart, like many Latin Americans of my generation. For the commemoration of the 50 years of his disappearance, I invited the pianist Thomas Enhco, among other musical personalities, to share the stage with me for a tribute in songs. His jazz and poetic arrangement of Run Run se fue pa'l Norte,was for me, as for the public, a real revelation, a moment of very strong emotion. Violeta's songs are eternal: their beauty is not frozen in stone, it is due to this miracle of incessant renewal. They seem to be written to be reinvented. Today's generation finds as much happiness as the previous one in immersing themselves in this powerful music, while bringing to it the freshness of a fresh look. Violeta meets jazz is the encounter between a musical genius, pure as a rough diamond, and a universe of sensitivity, fantasy and harmonic imagination. I'd like to think she would have loved it. »
