Viva españa !: Concert

In France, the attraction for Spain is not just a legend, it is much deeper and rooted in our culture. Carmen became the first of our operas and the Boléro remains the favorite symphonic work of the French while remaining the most performed in the world! Maurice Ravel ultimately knew little about Spain: it rather came to him when in Paris he frequented the talented artists of the Iberian Peninsula: Ricardo Viñes, Isaac Albéniz and Manuel De Falla.

Associated with an exoticism loaded with folkloric, sensual and wild images, Spain also opens the “gates of the Orient”. The Alborada del gracioso (1905) was born on the piano, before becoming a scintillating and dancing symphonic tableau, just like the Spanish Rapsody (1907). As for the famous Boléro (1928), it is almost no longer a dance, but rather a vast and slow procession that swells like a joyful crowd.

On the other side of the Rhine, Richard Strauss also took an interest in Spain with his symphonic concerto poem Don Quixote (1897). The hero is none other than the solo cello and to symbolize Sancho Panza, Strauss uses three instruments within the orchestra: the bass clarinet, the tuba and the viola. The great moments of Cervantes' famous novel are set to music in these "Fantastic variations on a chivalrous theme": the fight against the herd of sheep, the windmills and even the flight in the air...

En France, l’attirance pour l’Espagne n’est pas qu’une légende, elle est bien plus profonde et ancrée dans notre culture. Carmen est devenu le premier de nos opéras et le Boléro demeure l’œuvre symphonique préférée des Français tout en restant la plus jouée dans le monde ! Maurice Ravel a finalement peu connu l’Espagne : elle est plutôt venue à lui quand à Paris il fréquentait les talentueux artistes de la péninsule ibérique : Ricardo Viñes, Isaac Albéniz et Manuel De Falla.

Associée à un exotisme chargé d’images folkloriques, sensuelles et sauvages, l’Espagne ouvre également les « portes de l’Orient ». L’Alborada del gracioso (1905) est né au piano, avant de devenir un tableau symphonique scintillant et dansant, tout comme la Rapsodie espagnole (1907). Quant au fameux Boléro (1928), il n’est presque plus une danse, mais plutôt un vaste et lent défilé qui enfle comme une foule joyeuse.

De l’autre côté du Rhin, Richard Strauss s’est également intéressé à l’Espagne avec son poème symphonique concertant Don Quichotte (1897). Le héros n’est autre que le violoncelle solo et pour symboliser Sancho Panza, Strauss utilise trois instruments au sein de l’orchestre : la clarinette basse, le tuba et l’alto. Les grands moments du célèbre roman de Cervantès sont mis en musique dans ces « Variations fantastiques sur un thème à caractère chevaleresque » : le combat contre le troupeau de moutons, les moulins à vent et même le vol dans les airs…
