Part folklore, part opera-ballet, this féerie presents local pagan traditions on the day of the summer solstice and historical events from Cossack times to the more recent 2014 Ukrainian Revolution of Dignity.

A work that has survived decades of oblivion, having been forgotten by the Soviet government. The new premiere of the fairy tale by contemporary Ukrainian composer Eugene Stankovich took place on stage at the Lviv National Opera in 2017. This exciting performance combines modern musical language, choral art, over a thousand folk rituals and traditions, and contemporary choreography and stage design including video projection. “This exhibition has become a true Ukrainian breakthrough of contemporary music-theater art” (Music).

Forty years of oblivion and banning by the Soviet authorities could not overshadow the fascination with Yevhen Stankovych's folk opera-ballet 'When the Fern Blooms' in Ukraine and now also abroad. Director Vasyl Vovkun and conductor Volodymyr Sirenko join the composer to explain the unique fusion of influences in this work, the eventful history of its composition up to its world premiere and the inspiration behind its current staging at Lviv National Opera.

In 1977, the French impresario company “Aliteka” asked Yevhen Stankovych to write a grand stage composition for the People’s Academic Choir named after G. Verovka. During a guest tour, the performance had to be presented in Grand Opéra in Paris. However, in 1979 the premiere of the féerie, which was created in cooperation with famous artists of the 20th century – set designer Yevhen Lysyk and choreographer Anatolii Shekera, was banned by the Soviet authorities with a neutral wording “for technical reasons”. The real reason for the prohibition was the representation of the Ukrainian culture in an impressive performance, which would inevitably provoke a development of a new stage of national performing arts in the context of post-avant-garde style, which was incompatible with the ideologically acceptable artistic direction of “socialist realism” in the Soviet Union.

After decades of oblivion, a complete director’s stage version of the féerie “When the Fern Blooms” was presented for the first time in 2017 at Lviv National Opera. This time the new generation of artists collaborated with the composer: director Vasyl Vovkun, conductor Volodymyr Sirenko, set designer Tadei Ryndzak, costume designer Hanna Ipatieva, lightening designer Dmytro Tsyperdiuk.

Ukrainian singer, People’s Artist of Ukraine Nina Matviienko took part in the premiere performances. Later, in 2018, the feerie “When the Fern Blooms” by Ye. Stankovych was presented at Odesa National Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre and Taras Shevchenko National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Ukraine.

“There is no vector plot, classical operatic arias or duets. The composition is built as a huge mosaic, in which contrast scenes, sketches and episodes are combined. This reflects the mosaic thinking of the 20th century, which is strangely combined with the principle of poetic cinema”.

«Коли цвіте папороть» Є. Станковича
Ще в середині 70-их рр. ХХ століття Євген Станкович отримав пропозицію від французької імпресарської фірми «Алітека» на написання масштабного сценічного твору для Народного академічного хору ім. Г. Верьовки, який би мав прозвучати в т.ч. на гастрольних виступах в паризькій «Гранд-Опера». Однак прем’єра феєрії, над якою композитор працював спільно з художником Євгеном Лисиком та балетмейстером Анатолієм Шекерою, не відбулася за вказівкою влади, а формально –  «з технічних причин». Причиною ж цьому – репрезентація української культури у вражаючому дійстві, яке неодмінно б спровокувало новий виток розвитку національного сценічного мистецтва в контексті поставангардної стилістики.

Після десятиріч забуття цілісна режисерська сценічна версія феєрії «Коли цвіте папороть» вперше була поставлена у 2017 році на сцені Львівської національної опери. Цього разу над твором спільно з композитором співпрацювало наступне покоління митців – режисер Василь Вовкун, диригент Володимир Сіренко, художник Тадей Риндзак, художниця костюмів Ганна Іпатьєва,  художник світла Дмитро Ципердюк.

Цей вражаючий спектакль поєднує модерну музичну мову, хорове виконавство, народні традиції обрядовості і сучасну хореографію. Доповнює враження – яскрава сценографія із залученням відеопроекції.

У прем’єрних виставах брала участь українська співачка, народна артистка України Ніна Матвієнко. Згодом, у 2018 році феєрія «Коли цвіте папороть» Є. Станковича була представлена на сценах Одеського національного академічного театру опери та балету і Національної опери України імені Т. Г. Шевченка.

«Тут немає векторного сюжету, звичних для опер арій, дуетів. Натомість твір будується як величезна мозаїка, у якій за принципом контрасту поєднуються сцени, замальовки, епізоди. «Коли цвіте папороть» Є. Станковича стала також першою сучасною українською оперою, що транслюється на стрімінговому інтернет-телебаченні MEGOGO, сайті найновіших європейських оперних постановок Opera Vision та європейській театральній платформі Dramox.
