Una historia para contar la Historia. O, más bien, para transformarla. Un ballo in maschera, escrita por Giuseppe Verdi en 1857, narra el asesinato de un rey. Y en los territorios independentistas de lo que acabaría siendo Italia, ocupados en ese entonces por Austria, el sentido de una ópera con ese tema era transparente.
La obra, con un libreto de Antonio Somma basado en el que Eugène Scribe había escrito para otra ópera, Gustave III, de Daniel-François Auber (estrenada en 1833), iba a llevar como título, también, el nombre del rey. Sin embargo, la censura llevó no sólo a cambiar de planes en ese aspecto sino a convertir al monarca en Duque de Pomerania. Se trató de estrenar la ópera como Una vendetta in dominò, pero un intento de asesinato de Napoleón III hizo que el teatro San Carlo de Nápoles desistiera del estreno. Verdi rompió el contrato, el teatro lo demandó y él respondió con una contrademanda por daños. Finalmente, la ópera se presentó en Roma en 1859, pero para ese entonces ya se llamaba Un baile de máscaras y su protagonista era Riccardo, gobernador de la lejana Boston.

A story to tell history. Or, rather, to transform it. Un ballo in maschera, written by Giuseppe Verdi in 1857, narrates the murder of a king. And in the independence territories of what would end up being Italy, occupied at that time by Austria, the meaning of an opera with that theme was transparent.
The work, with a libretto by Antonio Somma based on the one that Eugène Scribe had written for another opera, Gustave III, by Daniel-François Auber (premiered in 1833), was also going to have the name of the king as its title. However, the censorship led not only to change plans in that regard but also to make the monarch Duke of Pomerania. An attempt was made to premiere the opera as Una vendetta in dominò, but an assassination attempt on Napoleon III caused the San Carlo theater in Naples to abandon the premiere. Verdi broke the contract, the theater sued him, and he responded with a countersuit for damages. Finally, the opera was presented in Rome in 1859, but by then it was already called A Masquerade Ball and its protagonist was Riccardo, governor of distant Boston.
