The year is 1924, and the "Year of Czech Music" was also celebrated in Brno for the first time. The year-long festival of music was introduced by a festive concert dedicated to Leoš Janáček's 70th birthday and Josef Suk's 50th birthday. It was supposed to be a big surprise for Janáček, the orchestra of the Brno National Theater was supplemented by conservatory students and members of the German Theater. It should have been a real tribute to both creators. Janáčk's Taras Bulba and Suk's Zrání were on the program of the January morning Sunday concert. But everything turned out somehow "after Brno". The town theater was festively decorated, including the Master's box, but Janáček did not arrive. Only after the concert did it become clear that conductor František Neumann had forgotten to invite him. Meanwhile, Janáček wanted to buy tickets, but they were already sold out, so he went for a walk instead. He then jokingly described it in a letter to his friend Kamila Stösslova: "It was a 'shit' for you in Brno." They were doing a kind of celebration of me and the composer Suk. I didn't even get tickets to buy - so I didn't go there. They called, called out - and I was somewhere behind Brno in the snowy fields!"

The orchestral rhapsody Taras Bulba is based on Nikolai Vasilievich Gogol's novella of the same name, which Janáček recognized in the Russian original at a joint reading of the Brno Russian Circle as early as 1905. However, he did not portray the story of the Ukrainian Cossack until the beginning of the First World War, in the first half of 1915. Authoritarian police rampage against however, everything Russian led the composer to stop work. He returned to it only in the spring of 1918, when he completed the composition as a "Slavic Rhapsody". The premiere of this unusual piece did not take place until 1921, when František Neumann performed it with the Brno Theater Orchestra.

It is surprising that Antonín Dvořák's Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in G minor (1841–1904) is not performed more often on concert stages, as it is a very impressive work. Dvořák composed it shortly after he met the young Leoš Janáček, i.e. in 1876, but its present form dates back to 1883, when the composer made an extensive revision. The concert deviates somewhat from the Chopin-Liszt tradition of the time, i.e. the alternating surfaces of a virtuoso-conceived solo part and a dominant orchestra. Dvořák replaced these contrasts with a unified musical flow of a symphonic composition.

Josef Suk (1874–1935) composed his monumental symphonic poem Zrání almost in the same period as his Taras Bulba's Janáček, in the years 1912–1917. The poem of the same name by Antonín Sova became Suk's inspiration for this composition. The poet's confession was close to the composer, he too had a need to communicate his feelings and experiences through music, from the tragic ones, as we know them from his Asrael symphony, to hope and joy in life and creation. Due to Suk's workload, especially in the Czech Quartet, the composition took a long time, so the premiere did not take place until October 30, 1918, i.e. two days after the declaration of Czechoslovakia. Zrání was performed for the first time with the Czech Philharmonic by Václav Talich, and the reception was very warm, although some listeners and critics were somewhat taken aback by the complexly conceived score. Today we understand this magnificent symphonic poem as a jewel of symphonic work of this period.

Im Jahr 1924 wurde in Brno erstmals das „Jahr der tschechischen Musik“ gefeiert. Das ganzjährige Musikfest wurde eingeleitet durch ein Festkonzert anlässlich der siebzigsten Geburtstags von Leoš Janáček und des fünfzigsten von Josef Suk. Das Konzert war als Überraschung für Janáček gedacht, man erweiterte das Orchester des Brünner Nationaltheaters durch Studenten des Konservatoriums und Mitglieder des deutschen Theaters. Auf dem Programm des an einem Januarsonntag stattfindenden Vormittagskonzerts zu Ehren der beiden großen Komponisten standen Janáčeks Taras Bulba und Suks Lebensreifen. Doch kam alles etwas anders als geplant.  Das Stadttheater war festlich geschmückt, ebenso die Meisterloge, doch von Janáček keine Spur. Erst nach dem Konzert kam heraus, dass der Dirigent František Neumann vergessen hatte, ihn einzuladen. Janáček wollte sich unterdessen Konzertkarten kaufen, doch es waren schon alle ausverkauft, und so machte er denn stattdessen einen Spaziergang. In einem Brief an seine Freundin Kamila Stösslová schilderte er humorvoll die Begebenheit: „Das war ein Spaß hier in Brünn. Man hatte eine Art Feier für mich und den Komponisten Suk vorbereitet. Ich habe es nicht einmal geschafft, Karten zu kaufen – also bin ich denn nicht hingegangen. Sie riefen, sie suchten nach mir – und ich war irgendwo außerhalb der Stadt in den verschneiten Feldern!“

Die Orchesterrhapsodie Taras Bulba basiert auf der gleichnamigen Novelle von Nikolai Gogol, die Janáček bei einer gemeinsamen Lesung des Brünner Russischen Kreises bereits 1905 im russischen Original kennengelernt hatte. Seine Arbeit an der Lebensgeschichte des ukrainischen Kosaken nahm er zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs in der ersten Jahreshälfte 1915 auf, doch zwangen ihn die polizeilichen Umtriebe in der Monarchie gegen alles Russische ihn bald dazu, sie vorläufig zu unterbrechen. Erst im Frühjahr 1918 widmete er sich wieder dem Stück, um es schließlich als „slawische Rhapsodie“ zu vollenden. Ihre Premiere erlebte diese ungewöhnliche Komposition erst im Jahr 1921, als František Neumann sie zusammen mit dem Brünner Theaterorchester einstudierte.

Es mag verwundern, dass das Konzert für Klavier und Orchester g-Moll von Antonín Dvořák (1841–1904) nicht öfter auf den Konzertpodien gespielt wird, ist es doch ein überaus ansprechendes Werk. Dvořák vollendete es im Jahr 1876, kurz nachdem er den jungen Leoš Janáček kennengelernt hatte, die heutige Gestalt des Stückes stammt jedoch von 1883, als der Komponist eine weitreichende Überarbeitung vornahm. Das Konzert entzieht sich etwas der damaligen, von Chopin und Liszt geprägten Tradition, wonach die Flächen eines virtuos konzipierten Soloparts und des dominierenden Orchesters einander abwechseln. Diese Kontraste ersetzte Dvořák durch den einheitlichen Musikstrom einer symphonischen Komposition.

Seine monumentale symphonische Dichtung Lebensreifen komponierte Josef Suk (1874–1935) in den Jahren 1912–1917, also nahezu im selben Zeitraum wie Janáček seinen Taras Bulba. Die Inspiration zu seinem Werk hatte Suk im gleichnamigen Gedicht von Antonín Sova gefunden. Das Bekenntnis des Poeten war dem Komponisten nah, denn auch er hatte das Bedürfnis, durch die Musik seine Gefühle und Erlebnisse mitzuteilen – von den tragischen, wie wir sie auch aus seiner Symphonie Asrael kennen, bis hin zu Zuversicht, Lebens- und Schaffensfreude. Da Suk vor allem durch seine Tätigkeit beim Böhmischen Quartett voll ausgelastet war, zog sich die Arbeit an der Komposition in die Länge, so dass sie erst am 30. Oktober 1918, also zwei Tage nach der Ausrufung der Tschechoslowakei, ihre Uraufführung erlebte. Lebensreifen wurde das erste Mal von der Tschechischen Philharmonie unter ihrem Dirigenten Václav Talich einstudierte und wurde begeistert aufgenommen, wenngleich manche Zuhörer wie Kritiker etwas ratlos angesichts der kompliziert angelegten Partitur waren. Heute gilt diese großartige symphonische Dichtung als ein Kleinod des symphonischen Schaffens ihrer Epoche.

Píše se rok 1924 a také v Brně se poprvé slavil „Rok české hudby“. Celoroční svátek hudby uvozoval slavnostní koncert věnovaný sedmdesátinám Leoše Janáčka a padesátinám Josefa Suka. Pro Janáčka to mělo být velké překvapení, orchestr brněnského Národního divadla byl doplněn studenty konzervatoře a členy německého divadla. Měl to být skutečný hold oběma tvůrcům. Na programu lednového dopoledního nedělního koncertu byl Janáčkův Taras Bulba a Sukovo Zrání. Ale vše dopadlo jaksi „po brněnsku“. Městské divadlo bylo slavnostně vyzdobeno, včetně Mistrovy lóže, ale Janáček nedorazil. Až po koncertu vyšlo najevo, že dirigent František Neumann jej zapomněl pozvat. Janáček si mezitím chtěl vstupenky zakoupit, ale už bylo vyprodáno, takže šel místo toho na procházku. Popsal to pak žertovně v dopisu přítelkyni Kamile Stösslové: „To Vám byla v Brně ‚švanda‘. Dělali jakousi oslavu mou a skladatele Suka. Nedostal jsem ani vstupenky koupit – tak jsem tam nešel. Volali, vyvolávali – a já kdesi za Brnem v zasněžených polích!“

Orchestrální rapsodie Taras Bulba vychází ze stejnojmenné novely Nikolaje Vasiljeviče Gogola, kterou Janáček poznal v ruském originále na společném čtení brněnského Ruského kroužku už v roce 1905. Příběh ukrajinského kozáka ale ztvárnil až začátkem první světové války, v první půli roku 1915. Mocnářské policejní běsnění proti všemu ruskému však vedlo skladatele k přerušení práce. Vrátil se k ní až na jaře roku 1918, kdy skladbu dokončil, coby „slovanskou rapsodii“. Premiéra této nevšední skladby se konala až v roce 1921, kdy ji nastudoval s brněnským divadelním orchestrem František Neumann.

Je s podivem, že Koncert pro klavír a orchestr g moll Antonína Dvořáka (1841–1904) není na koncertních pódiích uváděn častěji, neboť se jedná o velmi působivé dílo. Dvořák jej zkomponoval krátce poté, co se seznámil s mladým Leošem Janáčkem, tedy v roce 1876, ale jeho dnešní podoba je až z roku 1883, kdy skladatel provedl rozsáhlou revizi. Koncert se poněkud vymyká tehdejší chopinovsko-lisztovské tradici, tedy střídání ploch virtuózně koncipovaného sólového partu a dominantního orchestru. Tyto kontrasty Dvořák nahradil jednotným hudebním proudem symfonické kompozice.

Svou monumentální symfonickou báseň Zrání komponoval Josef Suk (1874–1935) téměř ve stejném období jako Janáček svého Tarase Bulbu, v letech 1912–1917. Inspirací k této kompozici se Sukovi stala stejnojmenná báseň Antonína Sovy. Básníkovo vyznání bylo skladateli blízké, i on měl potřebu sdělit prostřednictvím hudby své pocity a zážitky, od těch tragických, jak je známe i z jeho symfonie Asrael, až po naději a radost ze života a tvorby. Kompozice, vzhledem k Sukově pracovní vytíženosti především v Českém kvartetu, trvala dlouho, a tak se premiéra uskutečnila až 30. října 1918, tedy dva dny po vyhlášení Československa. Zrání poprvé nastudoval s Českou filharmonií Václav Talich a přijetí bylo velmi vřelé, ač někteří posluchači i kritici byli ze složitě koncipované partitury poněkud zaražení. Dnes chápeme tuto velkolepou symfonickou báseň jako klenot symfonické tvorby tohoto období.
