What makes Carmen a stable leader in the world’s most popular operas? Among other things, circumstances that made his initial success difficult. The characters in Mérimée’s short story are mostly criminal and immoral people on the fringes of society (runaway soldiers, smugglers, persistent women), so taking the story to the opera stage was almost a scandal. The composer died before he could understand the success of his opera.

Since then, the world has changed a lot: the story of a gypsy girl with a demonic appeal is conquered on stage, ballet, concert podium, film, in countless variations. The hits of Bizet’s opera, Torreádordal, Habanera, Seguidilla, Virágária, The Smuggler Quintet, and excellent choirs and interludes are widely known. The virtues of the musical formulation of the act of a passion that stifles a sense of duty, of jealousy leading to murder, are an effective display of deep emotions and dramatic clashes, agility, humor, and Spanish temperament.

His textbook was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy based on his novel of the same title by Prosper Mérimée.
