“La Forza del destino” di Giuseppe Verdi (Le Roncole, 10 ottobre 1813 – Milano, 27 gennaio 1901) ebbe la sua prima rappresentazione al Teatro Imperiale di San Pietroburgo nel novembre del 1862. Il libretto venne affidato a Francesco Maria Piave, che con questo titolo concluse un rapporto con Verdi iniziato quasi 20 anni prima con Ernani. Sebbene la recita ottenne un buon successo, Verdi decise di rimettere mano ad alcuni momenti dell’opera che venne ripresentata, nella seconda versione, alla Scala di Milano nel 1869. E proprio per questo debutto Verdi scrisse la celebre Ouverture, con gli accordi iniziali che simboleggiano il potere del destino.

“O mio babbino caro” è l’aria manifesto di Gianni Schicchi che Lauretta canta rivolgendosi al padre, pregandolo di aiutarla nel suo amore verso Rinuccio Donati. L’opera fu inizialmente pensata da Giacomo Puccini (Lucca, 22 dicembre 1858 – Bruxelles, 29 novembre 1924) come parte integrante del Trittico, assieme a Il tabarro e Suor Angelica. In realtà, Gianni Schicchi, rappresentata in prima mondiale al Metropolitan di New York il 14 dicembre 1918, è il titolo che ha avuto più successo e viene spesso abbinata ad opere di altri compositori.

La fama per Arturo Buzzi Peccia (Milano, 13 ottobre 1854 – New York, 29 agosto 1943) si deve a Lolita, una serenata spagnola sul ritmo di bolero. Dedicatario del brano fu Enrico Caruso, che la incise su 78 giri nel 1903.

Valente compositore, celebre direttore d’orchestra e conoscitore di voci molto rinomato, Buzzi Peccia stabilì la sua vita professionale e personale negli Stati Uniti d’America, dove a Chicago prima e a New York poi ricevette incarichi come professore di canto.

Il “Don Giovanni” di Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Salisburgo, 27 gennaio 1756 – Vienna, 5 dicembre 1791) costituisce, con Così fan tutte  e Le nozze di Figaro la cosiddetta trilogia italiana di Lorenzo Da Ponte, che ne scrisse appunto i libretti.
Il gioco di seduzione operato da Don Giovanni nei confronti dell’ingenua Zerlina contribuisce a creare uno dei momenti più noti dell’intero panorama operistico, con un tema che sarà poi utilizzato anche in alcuni interventi cinematografici del XX secolo. È un brano nel quale Mozart e Da Ponte sottolineano da una parte la protervia dell’aristocrazia e dall’altra la speranza di una classe sociale che aspira ad un futuro migliore. Sarà solamente grazie all’arrivo di Donna Elvira se Don Giovanni non riuscirà ad arricchire il suo già ricco catalogo di amanti.

L’opera Un giorno fortunato è basata su una delle opere rappresentative dei romanzi coreani moderni, “Lucky Day”. È una delle rare composizioni coreane che vengono rappresentate nei teatri di tutto il mondo. Divisa in due atti, la storia è molto familiare al grande pubblico e la musica ha reminiscenze verdiane e pucciniane, compositori noti e amati dal pubblico coreano. Merito del compositore Ji-Un Park è quello di aver scritto un’opera in cui l’energia contribuisce a trasferire le emozioni dagli interpreti al pubblico.

L’attribuzione della paternità di questo popolare brano va riconosciuta al compositore spagnolo Sebastián Iradier Salaverri (Lanciego, 20 gennaio 1809 – Vitoria, 6 dicembre 1865).
La sua carriera musicale fu principalmente dedita alla composizione di habanere, una danza di origine cubana molto simile al tango. Ed è proprio ad una sua habanera “El Arreglito”, che Georges Bizet si ispirò per “L’amour est un oiseau rebelle”, l’aria più celebre della sua Carmen.
Tradotta in numerose lingue e in migliaia di versioni, “La Paloma”, fu scritta da Iradier dopo una sua visita a Cuba dove ebbe modo di ascoltare molte delle melodie popolari che ispirarono la creazione del brano.

Luigi Arditi (Crescentino, 22 luglio 1822 – Hove, 1 maggio 1903) deve la sua fama principalmente a “Il bacio” una romanza valzer composta nel 1860 per Marietta Piccolomini sui versi del baritono Gottardo Aldighieri.
Eppure, Arditi fu un eminente compositore di opere, oltre che violinista e grande direttore d’orchestra.
Il brano nacque quasi per caso quando Arditi si trovava a Manchester. Fu in quell’occasione che, mentre sulla tastiera del pianoforte eseguiva una prima versione dell’aria, viene ascoltato dal soprano Piccolomini che innamoratasi della composizione, ne sarà la prima interprete e la porterà alla fama eterna.

Charles-Louis Ambroise Thomas (Metz, 5 agosto 1811 – Parigi, 12 febbraio 1896) fu un compositore francese molto attivo nella produzione operistica (14 titoli) nel corso del XIX secolo, anche se solo Mignon e Hamlet  sono tuttora in repertorio nei teatri mondiali. Il tema di Hamlet è tratto dalla commedia shakespeariana, anche se in realtà l’intero intreccio narrativo è stato modificato.
L’aria è tratta dal secondo atto, quando il principe Amleto si rivolge ad una compagnia di teatranti da lui assunti per una rappresentazione. È un elogio al vino, un invito a dimenticare gli anni bui e la tristezza che pesa sul suo cuore, un invito al futuro pieno di speranza.
Cresciuto all’interno di una famiglia di musicisti, Johann Strauss figlio (Vienna 25 ottobre 1825 – 3 giugno 1899) vanta una produzione immensa tra musica da ballo ed operette. Nel corso della sua vita, sono oltre 500 le composizioni tra valzer, polche, marce e quadriglie che costituivano il repertorio delle sale da ballo dei palazzi aristocratici e imperiali del tardo impero austro-ungarico. Il valzer “Sul bel Danubio blu” rappresenta senza ombra di dubbio la composizione più celebre che vale a Johann Strauss figlio il titolo di “re del valzer”.

Ancora Giuseppe Verdi, e ancora Francesco Maria Piave a firmare versi e melodia di un’aria che è tra le più note della scena lirica di ogni tempo. Eppure La traviata non era nata sotto i migliori auspici. La censura che aveva operato tagli e rimaneggiamenti, costringendo Verdi ad ambientare l’opera in un tempo diverso da quello immaginato, ed infine la prima alla Fenice di Venezia dove era stata accolta tiepidamente. Ma Verdi non si era dato per vinto: qualche modifica ed un cast all’altezza, e solamente un anno dopo La traviata spiccò il volo verso la notorietà che la pone tra le opere più eseguite di ogni tempo a livello mondiale.
La scena si svolge a casa di Violetta a Parigi, ed è qui che la padrona di casa invita Alfredo ad intonare il celebre “Libiamo ne’ lieti calici”, il brindisi che sottolinea le gioie del vino, dell’amore e del piacere. Ad Alfredo, che intona questo celebre brindisi in tempo di valzer, si uniranno poi Violetta e gli altri invitati.
