"Così fan tutte" - "that's how everyone does it": That's what Don Alfonso, Guglielmo and Ferrando's friend, claims. He wants to prove to them that their fiancés, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, are no exception to the rule and, like all women, are unfaithful. The men in love, sure of the loyalty of their respective wives, get involved in the game in which they both disguise themselves to woo their friend's partner. Fiordiligi and Dorabella are initially steadfast, but finally, with the help of the witty Despina, Don Alfonso succeeds in finding the wrong couples. Before anything worse happens, he initiates a reconciliation. However, in the end not everything is the same as before.
What appears as a game in this »School of Lovers« (»La scuola degli amanti«), as the subtitle of this last joint opera by Mozart and his congenial librettist da Ponte puts it, is nothing less than a parable about love and its love vulnerability, about human relationships and their changes. For da Ponte's profound libretto, which refers to numerous educational traditions of his time, Mozart wrote music that expresses the emotional experience of the protagonists, their devotion and passion, their doubts and abysses in a moving way, while always maintaining an engaging lightness.

By the way: An anecdote tells that Mozart did not like the first singer of the Fiordiligi, because she had the habit of lowering her chin on low notes and lifting it on high ones. Nevertheless, Mozart emphasized this unpleasant peculiarity with a wink by incorporating rapid alternation of high and low tones in the famous “rock aria” (“Come scoglio”).

Così fan tutte« – »so machen es alle«: Das behauptet Don Alfonso, der Freund von Guglielmo und Ferrando. Er will ihnen beweisen, dass auch ihre Verlobten Fiordiligi und Dorabella keine Ausnahme von der Regel und wie alle Frauen untreu sind. So lassen sich die verliebten Männer, der Treue ihrer jeweiligen Frauen sicher, auf das Spiel ein, in dem sie beide verkleidet um die Partnerin des Freundes werben. Fiordiligi und Dorabella zeigen sich zunächst standhaft, doch gelingt es Don Alfonso schließlich mit Hilfe der gewitzten Despina, dass sich die falschen Paare finden. Bevor Schlimmeres geschieht, leitet er eine Versöhnung ein. Gleichwohl ist am Ende nicht alles wie zuvor.
Was in dieser »Schule der Liebenden« (»La scuola degli amanti«), wie es im Untertitel dieser letzten gemeinsamen Oper von Mozart und seinem kongenialen Librettisten da Ponte heißt, als Spiel erscheint, ist nichts weniger als eine Parabel über die Liebe und ihre Verletzbarkeit, über menschliche Beziehungen und ihre Veränderungen. Zu da Pontes tiefsinnigem Libretto, das auf zahlreiche Bildungstraditionen seiner Zeit Bezug nimmt, schrieb Mozart eine Musik, die dem seelischen Erleben der Protagonisten, ihrer Hingabe und Leidenschaft, ihren Zweifeln und Abgründen, in ergreifender Weise Ausdruck verleiht und dabei immer eine einnehmende Leichtigkeit bewahrt.

Übrigens: Eine Anekdote erzählt, dass Mozart die erste Sängerin der Fiordiligi nicht mochte, denn sie hatte die Angewohnheit, bei tiefen Noten das Kinn stark zu senken und bei hohen zu heben. Mozart strich diese ihm unangenehme Eigenart dennoch augenzwinkernd heraus, indem er für sie in der berühmten »Felsenarie« (»Come scoglio«) hohe und tiefe Töne in raschem Wechsel einbaute.
