The world of beasts - characters of this story - is very similar to human society, where the struggle for existence prevails. This is a story about Mykyta, a cunning fox that always comes out unscathed despite an inexorable force of difficult circumstances, thanks to his sharpness and agility. The opera performance amazes with beautiful sounds of cymbals, bandura, lyre, remarkable stage design, bright costumes, as well as the use of 3D projection and lighting. The show will undoubtedly appeal to both adults and children, as humor is fused with relevant social issues.

Family opera of Ivan Nebesnyi “Fox Mykyta” was written specially for Lviv National Opera, in order to broaden the modern Ukrainian opera repertoire for children and adults. The opera was first performed on February 21, 2020.

Libretto was written by the director Vasyl Vovkun and was based on the poem “Fox Mykyta” by Ivan Franko, which was first published in 1890 in Lviv children’s magazine “Dzvinok”. The following year, the magazine edition of the poem was published as a book. Right after its publishing, the fairy tale achieved great popularity. “I love my “Fox Mykyta” most of all because I wrote it for my children…,” said Ivan Franko. Indeed, the first listeners and readers of the poem were the children of the writer – Andrii, Taras, Petro and Hanna. However, Franko’s fairy tale has become popular not only among children but also among adults, because “Fox Mykyta” is interesting for both children and adults.

The fictional world of Franko’s poem is considered to be a model of social reality: in the fairy tale the main characters are animals which obey the law of the struggle for survival, but their behaviour is similar to the human one. Animals lead social and political life, hold certain positions, have strong family ties, visit each other, sue, quarrel, reconcile, cry, laugh, love and hate… In this society, where the truth, as well as the concept of good and evil, are nominal, deception, deceit, bribery and protection are valued… From up to down – everyone is corrupted and protected, and King Lion is n’t an exception. Having heard about the treasure of King Horokh, he rehabilitates Fox Mykyta and appoints him Chancellor of State… Director Vasyl Vovkun combined incompatible – “human” and “brutal”, which created the main conceptual humorous and satirical effect of the performance.

The basis of the compositional production of “Fox Mykyta” is the trial, distinguished by the author of the libretto Vasyl Vovkun and the composer Ivan Nebesnyi as the central idea of the performance. Fox Mykyta wins the lawsuit using his slyness and formidable talent. “We smile and sympathize with him, feeling jealous, because he is a brilliant showman, a talented actor, an excellent director, a successful human and animal. And we try to recognise our friends and acquaintances in Fox Mykyta. However, we do not admit that we are his closest relatives.” says director and librettist Vasyl Vovkun.

An international team of creators consists of director Vasyl Vovkun, conductors Teodor Kuchar (USA) and Iryna Stasyshyn, choirmaster – Vadym Yatsenko, choreographer Marcello Algeri (Italy), set designer Tadei Ryndzak, costume designer Anna Ipatieva, lighting designer Arvidas Buinauskas (Lithuania), 3D mapping Svitlana Reinish, mask designer Liudmyla Tabachkova.

The costumes to the opera “Fox Mykyta”, designed by the artist Anna Ipatieva, are elaborate and individual. Rich robes of Lion and Lioness are impressive and clearly distinguishable. The style of other characters is related to a certain animal and their clothes resemble those of modern people with elements of military camouflage because as Ivan Franko’s literary character Fox Mykyta says: “Our life’s a never-ending war”. The artist strongly emphasizes the concept of “never-ending war” as far as it is still topical. Animals’ hats are transparent and airy, made of metal wires.

3D mapping and complex spectacular lighting design are important elements of the scenography. However, there is an element which contrasts with the colourful and mobile stage constructions. This is a fixed huge circle with giant mistletoes inside of it. Mistletoe is a parasitic plant, which is considered sacred by many nations, a symbol of strength, revival, freedom from restrictions, but also vulnerability to a world of chaos.

Опера для сімейного перегляду «Лис Микита» Івана Небесного була написана спеціально на замовлення Львівської національної опери, з метою розширення сучасного українського оперного репертуару для дітей та дорослих. Прем’єра опери відбулася 21 лютого 2020 року.

Лібрето створене режисером опери Василем Вокуном за поемою «Лис Микита» Івана Франка, що уперше була надрукована 1890 р. у львівському дитячому журналі «Дзвінок». Наступного року цей журнальний варіант з’явився окремою книжкою. Ця казка відразу після виходу у світ здобула нечувану популярність. «Я найбільше люблю свого “Лиса Микиту”, тому, що я його написав для своїх дітей…», – говорив Іван Франко. І справді, першими слухачами і читачами цього твору були власні діти письменника – Андрій, Тарас, Петро та Ганна. Проте Франкова казка стала улюбленою книжкою не лише для дітей, адже «Лис Микита» – твір двоадресатний: він однаково цікавий для дітей і для дорослих.

Художній світ Франкової поеми розглядається як своєрідна модель соціальної дійсності: у казці головними персонажами є звірі, які керуються законами боротьби за виживання, однак їхня поведінка аж надто нагадує людське суспільство. Звірі живуть суспільно-політичним життям, займають певні посади, перебувають у родинних стосунках один із одним, ходять у гості, судяться, сваряться і миряться, плачуть і сміються, люблять і ненавидять… У цьому соціумі, де правда умовна, так само, як умовними є поняття добра і зла, панують і цінуються обман, підступ, підкуп, протекція, брехня… Від низу до верху – усі пронизані й об‘єднані корупційними схемами й відносинами, тому не винятком є й Лев, який, почувши про скарб Гороха, реабілітовує Лиса і призначає державним канцлером… Поєднання режисером Василем Вовкуном непоєднуваного – “людського” зі “звірським” у подобі тварин – і творить головний концептуальний гумористично-сатиричний ефект вистави.

Основою композиційної постановки «Лиса Микити» є судовий процес, виокремлений автором лібрето Василем Вовкуном та композитором Іваном Небесним в головну площину дії. Лис Микита перемагає в судовому процесі завдяки хитрості та неабияким здібностям: «Ми йому навіть симпатизуємо, посміхаючись, і трішки заздримо, адже він – блискучий шоумен, талановитий актор, геніальний режисер, успішна людино-тварина… І кожен із нас у Лисові Микиті хоче впізнати когось зі своїх дуже добрих знайомих, не признаючись, що найближчим його родичем є кожен із нас…», – розповідає режисер і лібретист Василь Вовкун.

Музика опери, як і всі складові, підпорядкована загальному задуму – опера для дітей та дорослих. Композитор Іван Небесний у цьому творі синтезує різні жанри – опери, мюзиклу, оперетки, бурлеску, буффонади, шоу, перформенсу, творячи видовищну виставу. Мелодії та фрагменти опери легко запам’ятовується. В опері звучать і українські народні інструменти – трембіта, цимбали, бандура, колісна ліра. Музичні епізоди опери надзвичайно колоритні: сцена суду – урочиста, маршова, оркестрована густими барвами; фрагменти, що супроводжують Лисові хитрощі та їх наслідки – жвава полька. Лише два номери – арія Лиса Микити на суді і його дует з Лисицею – своїми медово-солодкими інтонаціями нагадують поп-хіти, але саме завдяки цій фальшивій солодкості й сентиментальності Лис вичавлює сльози у присутніх.

До реалізації постановки залучено міжнародну команду митців: режисер – Василь Вовкун, диригенти – Теодор Кучар (США) та Ірина Стасишин, хормейстер – Вадим Яценко, балетмейстер – Марчелло Алджері (Італія), художник – Тадей Риндзак, художниця костюмів – Ганна Іпатьєва, художник світла – Арвідас Буйнаускас (Литва), 3D мапінг – Світлана Рейніш, художниця-модельєр з виготовлення головних уборів – Людмила Табачкова.

Костюми опери «Лис Микита», розроблені художницею Ганною Іпатьєвою, відзначаються фантазією та індивідуальним баченням кожного образу. Вражаючі шати Лева і Левиці виділяються посеред звіриного царства багатством одеж. Інші персонажі об’єднані ознаками тої чи іншої тварини зі стилем одягу сучасних людей з елементами військового камуфляжу, адже як пише Іван Франко, вкладаючи думку у вуста Лиса Микити: «Наше все життя – війна є!». Художниця особливо підкреслює цей момент у костюмах, що залишається актуальним для нашого сьогодення. Головні убори звірів прозоро-повітряні, зроблені з металево-дротяних конструкцій.

Важливе значення у сценографії має 3D-мапінг та складне й видовищне світлове оформлення. Є тут, однак, елемент, протиставлений усьому злободенно-актуальному, барвистим і рухливим багатофігурним композиціям на сцені – непорушне велетенське коло і такий само гігантський, уміщений у це коло кущ омели на зрізаній кроні дерева. Омела – рослина-паразит, що у багатьох народів вважається священною, символ, серед численних значень якого – сила, відродження, свобода від обмежень, але й беззахисність перед світом хаосу.
