Giulio Cesare: Giulio Cesare in Egitto Händel

Caesar moet sterven, zoveel is duidelijk. In Händel’s opera ontsnapt de bekendste keizer uit de geschiedenis aan de dood om het eeuwige leven te vinden. Het gelijknamige toneelstuk van Shakespeare ziet Julius Caesar dan weer brutaal vermoord.

Samen met een groep studenten theater bevragen de zangers van de International Opera Academy de sterfelijkheid van Caesar. Via een combinatie van theaterteksten en barokaria’s zoeken ze uit wat Caesars dood (en leven) heeft teweeggebracht.

Caesar must die, that much is agreed. In Händel’s opera, however, history’s most famous emperor escapes his death and finds eternal life. In Shakespeare’s eponymous play, Julius Caesar is savagely murdered. 

Together with a group of acting students, the singers of the International Opera Academy question Caesar’s mortality. Using a combination of theatre texts and Baroque arias, they explore the meaning of Caesar’s death (and life).
