Giacomo Puccini combines three extremely diverse one-act plays in his triptych, which premiered at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1918: a bloody jealousy drama, the lonely tragedy of a nun and an Italian comedy surrounded by a greedy family clan. The finiteness of life is the element that is inherent in all three works in different ways. From this core, director Claus Guth develops his reading, which unfolds as a study of human types of death and how to cope with them. A ship - locked like a boat, like a monastery or even a dying room - becomes Christian Schmidt's connecting stage. In it, the spheres of life and death coexist and sometimes even mix. The staging reveals the invisible interweaving of both worlds.
