Tijdens de beginjaren van de Sovjet-Unie maakte Rusland woelige tijden door. Maar al schreef Prokofjev zijn Derde symfonie onder een slecht gesternte, hij slaagde er wonderwel in de tijdsgeest te vatten door de Russische romantische traditie te verzoenen met een moderne, experimentele aanpak. Ook de Georgische componist Gija Kantsjeli was gevormd door de Sovjet-Unie. Hij woonde een tijdlang in Antwerpen en was de eerste ‘composer in residence’ van het Antwerp Symphony Orchestra, dat nu samen met het Octopus Mannenkoor zijn allerlaatste werk uitvoert. In zijn Libera me (Quasi requiem) verkent hij de diepe emoties rond de eindigheid van het leven; op aangrijpende wijze vraagt hij om verlossing en genade. Ook de Zweeds-Russische Victoria Borisova-Ollas verkent thema’s als contemplatie en de mysteriën van het onbekende. In The Kingdom of Silence neemt ze ons mee op een boeiende tocht langs minimalistische klanklandschappen.

During the early years of the Soviet Union, Russia experienced turbulent times. Despite writing his Third Symphony under challenging circumstances, Prokofiev remarkably captured the zeitgeist by reconciling the Russian romantic tradition with a modern, experimental approach. Georgian composer Giya Kancheli, shaped by the Soviet Union, lived in Antwerp and was the first 'composer in residence' with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra. Together with the Octopus Symphonic Choir, they perform his final work. In his Libera me (Quasi requiem), Kancheli explores deep emotions surrounding the finitude of life, poignantly seeking redemption and grace. Swedish-Russian composer Victoria Borisova-Ollas also delves into themes of contemplation and the mysteries of the unknown. In The Kingdom of Silence, she takes us on a captivating journey through minimalist soundscapes.

Pendant les premières années de l'Union soviétique, la Russie traversait des temps agités. Mais même si Prokofiev a écrit sa Troisième symphonie sous une mauvaise étoile, il a réussi étonnamment bien à capturer l'esprit de l'époque en conciliant la tradition romantique russe avec une approche moderne et expérimentale.
