»Die vom rechten Wege Abgekommene« – das ist Violetta Valéry, die als Edelkurtisane in Paris ein Leben zwischen Glanz und Elend führt. Alles ist nur Spiel und Schein, auch die Liebe, bis Alfredo Germont in ihr wahre Gefühle erweckt. Das Glück aber ist ein seltener Gast und nur von kurzer Dauer: Violetta, an Schwindsucht leidet, wird erst gedemütigt und vergeht nach einem letzten Aufflackern ihrer Lebenskräfte.

Ein einziges Mal nur hat sich Giuseppe Verdi einem zeitgenössischen Sujet zugewandt, der »Kameliendame« des Pariser Autors Alexandre Dumas d.J. Als Roman wie als Theaterstück hat Dumas dieses auf wahren Begebenheiten beruhende Geschehen literarisch gestaltet. Verdi erfand dazu eine Musik von großer Eindringlichkeit, die dem Ausdruck von Emotionen viel Raum lässt: Freude und Überschwang, Klage und Verzweiflung. Der Hörer und Betrachter wird sogartig in die Handlung hineingenommen, um ganz unmittelbar am Schicksal Violettas Anteil zu nehmen. Als letztes Werk der sogenannten »Trilogia populare« ist die 1853 uraufgeführte und 1860 erstmals im Haus Unter den Linden gezeigte »Traviata« nach anfänglicher Skepsis rasch zu einer Erfolgsoper im internationalen Maßstab geworden. Die Inszenierung von Dieter Dorn lässt Violetta als eine Frau erscheinen, die von Anfang an eine Todgeweihte ist, sich aber gegen ihr Schicksal auflehnt. Am Ende ist sie einfach verschwunden, wie ins Nichts aufgelöst.

“The one who strayed from the right path” – that is Violetta Valéry, who as a noble courtesan in Paris leads a life between splendor and misery. Everything is just pretense, including love, until Alfredo Germont awakens true feelings in her. Happiness, however, is a rare guest and only short-lived: Violetta, who suffers from tuberculosis, is first humiliated and dies after a last flicker of her vitality.

Only once did Giuseppe Verdi turn to a contemporary subject, the »Lady of the Camellias« by the Parisian author Alexandre Dumas the Younger. Dumas has given literary form to this event, which is based on true events, both as a novel and as a play. For this purpose, Verdi invented a music of great poignancy that leaves a lot of room for the expression of emotions: joy and exuberance, lamentation and despair. The listener and viewer is immediately drawn into the action in order to take part directly in Violetta's fate. As the last work of the so-called »Trilogia populare«, the »Traviata«, which premiered in 1853 and was shown for the first time in Unter den Linden in 1860, quickly became a successful opera on an international scale after initial skepticism. Dieter Dorn's production lets Violetta appear as a woman who is doomed from the start but rebels against her fate. In the end she just disappeared, as if dissolved into nothing.
