Το διεθνώς αναγνωρισμένο έργο Η Λειτουργία του Ορφέα, που συνέθεσε ο κορυφαίος έλληνας συνθέτης με καταγωγή από το Ηράκλειο Γιάννης Μαρκόπουλος, έρχεται για δύο παραστάσεις στο Πολιτιστικό Συνεδριακό Κέντρο Ηρακλείου, με τη σύμπραξη της Φιλαρμόνια Ορχήστρας Αθηνών, υπό τη μουσική διεύθυνση του καταξιωμένου αρχιμουσικού Ραφαήλ Πυλαρινού.

Η Λειτουργία του Ορφέα - Από το σκοτάδι στο φως, είναι μια σύνθεση του 1991 που παρουσιάστηκε για πρώτη φορά το 1994 στο Palais des Beaux-Arts των Βρυξελλών, αφιερωμένη στον επαναπροσδιορισμό του ανθρώπου με την φύση, εγκαινιάζοντας μια νέα σχέση κοινού και συναυλιακής παράστασης, ταυτόχρονα με έκθεση κεραμικής, ζωγραφικής και χειροτεχνίας, υπό την αιγίδα του Βελγικού Υπουργείου πολιτισμού. Ο υπότιτλος «Από το σκοτάδι στο φως» χρησιμοποιείται από τον συνθέτη στις ζωντανές παρουσιάσεις του έργου. 

Το έργο για συμφωνική ορχήστρα, βαρύτονο, υψίφωνο, αφηγητή, μικτή χορωδία καθώς  και παραδοσιακό σύνολο (λαούτο, κανονάκι και λύρα), είναι δομημένο στη βάση των διασωθέντων αρχαίων ορφικών ποιημάτων. Για το λιμπρέτο ο συνθέτης επέλεξε φράσεις, ακόμα και μεμονωμένες λέξεις από τα θραύσματα των ποιημάτων. Το πνευματικό της περιεχόμενο, εμπλουτισμένο με πολλά στοιχεία αναζωογονεί το μύθο του προφήτη μουσικού Ορφέα. Τα αφηγηματικά μέρη συνοδεύονται κυρίως από άρπα, καθώς η πρόθεση του συνθέτη είναι η δημιουργία ραψωδικής διάθεσης, ενώ τα σημεία όπου δύο φλάουτα παίζουν μαζί, παραπέμπουν στον αρχαίο δίαυλο.

Με την Λειτουργία του Ορφέα, ο συνθέτης Γιάννης Μαρκόπουλος υλοποιεί το μουσικό του όραμα, καταθέτοντας ακόμα ένα μουσικό έργο - ακρογωνιαίο λίθο του σύγχρονου νεοελληνικού πολιτισμού. Αναζητώντας φιλοσοφικά την βαθύτερη ενότητα του ανθρώπου με το φυσικό και κοινωνικό του περιβάλλον, το έργο αποτελεί νέα πρόταση και τομή στο σύνολο της ελληνικής μουσικής. Πρόκειται για δημιουργία με ενότητα αισθητικής και φιλοσοφικής άποψης ως προς τις ιδιαίτερες θεμελιακές αρχές του συνθέτη.

Σε σημείωμά του 1994, ο Γιάννης Μαρκόπουλος αναφέρει για το έργο:

«Εμπνεύστηκα από την εύγλωττη σιωπή των αρχαίων κειμένων και ένιωσα ότι η μουσική μπορεί να επιστρέφει στην αρχική της θέση και να λειτουργεί σαν σύνολο των πνευματικών και διανοητικών επιδόσεων. Η φράση του Πλάτωνος "Έστι δε πού η μέν επί σώματι γυμναστική, η δ' επί ψυχή μουσική" αντανακλά τις κατευθύνσεις του ενστίκτου μας να συνδιαλέγεται με τον φυσικό κόσμο αφήνοντας τους κανόνες της επιστήμης να διαπερνούν την τέχνη, για να την στηρίζουν. Αυτός ο επαναπροσδιορισμός ήταν για μένα απαραίτητος. Με την πίστη του στο φως, στην καθαρότητα της ψυχής, ο Ορφέας έγινε μύστης μιας νέας θρησκείας που στηριζόταν στη καλοσύνη και στην αγνότητα. Στηριζόταν επίσης στο σεβασμό του φυτικού και ζωικού κόσμου που μας περιβάλλει. Ρομαντισμός και νοσταλγία; Ίσως. Όμως σίγουρα το εγγύς μέλλον. Η Ευρυδίκη είναι η βροχή, το νερό. Ο Ορφέας είναι το όριον φωτός, εάν θέλουμε.»

The internationally recognized work Orpheus's Liturgy , composed by the leading Greek composer from Heraklion, Yiannis Markopoulos, is coming for two performances at the Cultural Conference Center of Heraklion, in collaboration with the Athens Philharmonic Orchestra, under the musical direction of the acclaimed chief musician Raphael Pylarinos. .

The Liturgy of Orpheus - From Darkness to Light , is a 1991 composition first presented in 1994 at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, dedicated to redefining man with nature, inaugurating a new relationship between audience and concert performance, simultaneously with an exhibition of ceramics, paintings and handicrafts, under the auspices of the Belgian Ministry of Culture. The subtitle "From Darkness to Light" is used by the composer in live performances of the work. 

The work for symphony orchestra, baritone, treble, narrator, mixed choir as well as traditional ensemble (lute, canon and lyre), is structured on the basis of the surviving ancient Orphic poems. For the libretto the composer chose phrases and even individual words from the fragments of the poems. Its spiritual content, enriched with many elements, revives the myth of the musical prophet Orpheus. The narrative parts are mainly accompanied by a harp, as the composer's intention is to create a rhapsodic mood, while the parts where two flutes play together refer to the ancient channel.

With the Liturgy of Orpheus, the composer Yiannis Markopoulos realizes his musical vision, depositing yet another musical work - a cornerstone of modern modern Greek culture. Philosophically searching for the deepest unity of man with his natural and social environment, the work is a new proposition and intersection in the whole of Greek music. It is a creation with a unity of aesthetic and philosophical point of view regarding the particular fundamental principles of the composer.

In a note from 1994, Yiannis Markopoulos mentions about the project:

"I was inspired by the eloquent silence of the ancient texts and felt that music can return to its original place and function as a set of spiritual and intellectual achievements. Plato's phrase "Gymnastics is for the body, music is for the soul" reflects the directions of our instinct to dialogue with the natural world, letting the rules of science permeate art, to support it. This redefinition was necessary for me. With his faith in the light, in the purity of the soul, Orpheus became the mystic of a new religion based on goodness and purity. It was also based on respect for the plant and animal world that surrounds us. Romance and nostalgia? Maybe. But definitely in the near future. Eurydice is the rain, the water.
