Le Het Collectief, Lucile Richardot et Stefan Cifolelli interprètent la version pour orchestre de chambre du Chant de la Terre réalisée par Reinbert de Leeuw, une partition intime et concentrée qui communique autrement le message de l’œuvre de Gustav Mahler.

Gustav Mahler est né au siècle de la photographie. Depuis les premiers portraits de l’enfant d’Iglau (Jihlava) jusqu’aux derniers clichés pris sur le paquebot qui ramène vers l’Europe le compositeur malade où l’attend la mort, c’est toute la vie de Mahler qui défile sous nos yeux. Ainsi ce portrait du jeune homme pressé pris vers 1881, quelques années seulement après sa sortie du Conservatoire de Vienne, période dont seul subsiste l’unique mouvement de son Quatuor pour piano et cordes, écrit vraisemblablement en 1876. Mais ce ne sont pas les photos officielles, avec leurs poses trop composées et leurs sourires convenus, qui retiennent le plus l’attention. Celles prises dans l’intimité familiale nous touchent bien davantage. Parmi elles, il en est une qui me revient à chacune des auditions de Das Lied von der Erde, particulièrement dans la version chambriste de Reinbert de Leeuw. Il s’agit d’une photographie prise au cours de l’été 1905 à Maiernigg, cette propriété sur les rives du Wörthersee, où Mahler trouva, durant plusieurs saisons, son accomplissement. Face à l’objectif, il pose avec ses deux filles : Maria l’aînée, dite Putzi, fillette aux cheveux noirs de jais et sa cadette la blonde Anna, surnommée Gucki, qui semblait être appelée à devenir l’image de leur mère, Alma. Dans de vaporeuses robes blanches, les deux enfants rassurées par les bras paternels ont une expression à la fois intimidée et espiègle. Le visage de Mahler quant à lui émerge, encadré de ces deux petits visages juvéniles, étonnamment serein. Derrière ses fameuses lunettes cerclées, on devine son regard apaisé, impression que souligne un sourire que rien ne vient forcer. Superbe instant de tendresse incarnée.

Or on sait combien le bonheur est fugace : deux ans plus tard, Putzi était emportée par une scarlatine-diphtérie. Ce funeste 11 juillet 1907, la mort avait arraché à Mahler celle de ses deux enfants qui lui ressemblait le plus : « Elle était tout à fait sa fille, dira Alma. Il ne lui a pas été accordé de vivre longtemps mais il devait en être ainsi, elle devait être pendant quelques années sa joie et cela a en soi une valeur d’éternité. » À l’épreuve de ce deuil cruel s’ajouta pour Mahler celle du diagnostic d’une malformation cardiaque qui devait le priver de ses grands plaisirs d’été : les courses en montagne, la natation dans les lacs alpestres. Désormais c’est donc uniquement par un travail intérieur que Mahler parviendra à retrouver « le chemin de lui-même. »

En juin 1908, à Toblach, dans les montagnes du Tyrol du Sud, il se réfugie dans la solitude de son Häuschen, cette petite cabane construite au milieu de la nature, pour chercher à surmonter l’anxiété et retrouver, après la crise, l’inspiration qui l’avait momentanément abandonné. Grand lecteur, Mahler trouva dans un petit livre, Die chinesische Flöte (La Flûte chinoise), cadeau de son ami Theobald Pollak, le reflet de son état d’esprit. Cette petite anthologie constituée par Hans Bethge réunit des poèmes chinois des VIIe et VIIIe siècles, puisés dans divers recueils existants en français ou en allemand, et témoigne de la vogue pour l’orientalisme qui, depuis les dernières décennies du XIXe siècle, s’était imposée comme un phénomène européen. La poésie orientale trouvera une résonance particulière dans la mélancolie du compositeur, oscillant entre lassitude de l’existence et aspiration au repos éternel : « Sombre est la vie, sombre la mort ! » répète le premier lied quand le dernier affirme : « Partout, l’horizon sera bleu, éternellement, éternellement. »

En 1920, Arnold Schönberg fut le premier à donner, pour la Société d’exécutions musicales privées de Vienne, une version pour ténor, baryton et treize instrumentistes de Das Lied von der Erde, signant par là même son admiration pour Mahler. À son tour, Reinbert de Leeuw a proposé sa vision personnelle du Chant de la Terre fondée sur l’effectif schönbergien, tout en conservant certains instruments essentiels selon lui pour l’identité de l’œuvre – le contrebasson aux sonorités sombres pour le début d’Abschied par exemple ou la harpe qui exprime si bien le sentiment d’éternité. Ici, la perte de la puissance orchestrale est compensée par un équilibre subtil entre les instruments et les voix solistes, qui favorise une liaison plus intime encore du mot et de la musique, engageant l’auditeur dans une écoute plus concentrée.

Je conserve un souvenir ému de la première exécution en France de cette version de Das Lied par le Het Collectief, Lucile Richardot et Yves Saelens en solistes dirigés par Reinbert de Leeuw, au Festival de Saintes 2019. L’année suivante, les mêmes artistes sont venus donner l’oeuvre au Festival de Royaumont. Reinbert de Leeuw s’était éteint depuis quelques mois, mais il avait eu la force de mener à bien l’enregistrement de l’oeuvre dont il semblait avoir totalement intégré le message. C’est le jeune Gregor Mayrhofer qui le remplaçait alors dans une parfaite filiation. Entouré des musiciens du Het Collectief et des solistes pleinement investis, il parvenait à restituer toute l’intensité de cette partition qui porte non pas le chant d’un adieu mais plutôt celui d’un éternel renouveau et dans lequel se reflète le regard de Putzi.

The Het Collectief, Lucile Richardot and Stefan Cifolelli perform the chamber orchestra version of The Song of the Earth transcribed by Reinbert de Leeuw, an intimate and intense score which expresses the message of Gustav Mahler’s work differently.

Gustav Mahler was born in the age of photography. From the first portraits of the child from Iglau (today’s Jihlava, Czech Republic) to the last shots taken on the liner that brought the ailing composer back to Europe, where death awaited him, Mahler’s entire life unfolds before our eyes. A portrait of the hurried young man taken around 1881, a few years after his graduation from the Vienna Conservatory, reflects a period from which only the single movement of his Quartet for Piano, Violin, Viola and Cello in A Minor (circa 1876) survives. But the official photos, with their assumed poses and conventional smiles, are not those that draw our closest attention. We are much more touched by those taken in the privacy of the family. Among them, there is one which comes to my mind every time I hear Das Lied von der Erde, especially in Reinbert de Leeuw’s chamber version. It is a photograph taken in the summer of 1905 at Maiernigg, the estate on the banks of the Wörthersee where Mahler found fulfillment for several seasons. Facing the camera, he poses with his two daughters: the elder Maria, known as Putzi, a little girl with jet-black hair, and the younger, blond Anna, nicknamed Gucki, who seemed bound to become the image of their mother, Alma. Wearing flowing white dresses, the two children held in their father’s reassuring arms look at once intimidated and mischievous. Mahler’s face, framed by these two youthful faces, appears surprisingly serene. Behind his famous rimmed glasses, we can make out his peaceful gaze underlined by an uncontrived smiles – a beautiful moment of pure tenderness.

But happiness is fleeting: two years later, Putzi died of scarlet fever. On that fateful 11 July 1907, death snatched from Mahler the child who most resembled him: “She was very much his daughter,” said Alma. “She was not allowed to live long, but that’s how it had to be, she had to be his joy for a few years, and that in itself has the value of eternity.” The ordeal of this cruel bereavement was compounded for Mahler by the diagnosis of a heart defect, which deprived him of his great summer pleasures: mountain running and swimming in Alpine lakes. Henceforth, Mahler would only be able to find “the way back to himself” through inner work.

In June 1908, in the mountain village of Toblach (South Tyrol), he took refuge in the solitude of his Häuschen, a small hut built in the middle of nature, in an effort to overcome his anxiety and rediscover the inspiration that had deserted him after his tragic loss. An avid reader, Mahler found a reflection of his state of mind in a small book, Die Chinesische Flöte (The Chinese Flute), a gift from his friend Theobald Pollak. This small anthology compiled by Hans Bethge brings together Chinese poems from the 7th and 8th centuries, drawn from various existing collections in French and German, and bears witness to the long-standing vogue for Orientalism throughout Europe in last decades of the 19th century. Oriental poetry finds particular resonance with the composer’s melancholy state, fluctuating between weariness of existence and yearning for eternal rest: “Dark is life, dark is death!” repeats the first lied, while the last on states: “Everywhere, the horizon will be blue, eternally, eternally.”

In 1920, Arnold Schönberg was the first to perform a version of Das Lied von der Erde for tenor, baritone and thirteen instrumentalists, for Vienna’s Society for Private Musical Performances, thus reaffirming his admiration for Mahler. Reinbert de Leeuw proposed in turn his own vision of Song of the Earth based on Schönberg’s instrumentation, while retaining certain instruments that he considers essential to the work’s identity – the gloomy-sounding contrabassoon at the start of Abschied, for example, or the harp, which so aptly expresses the sense of eternity. Here, the loss of orchestral power is compensated by a subtle balance between instruments and solo voices, tightening the intimate connection between word and music, and engaging the listener’s fully focused attention.

I have fond memories of the first performance of this version of Das Lied in France by the Het Collectief, with Lucile Richardot and Yves Saelens as soloists conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw, at the 2019 Festival de Saintes. The same artists performed the work again at the Festival de Royaumont the following year. Reinbert de Leeuw had passed away a few months earlier, but he had had the strength to complete the recording of the work, whose message he seemed to have fully integrated. The young Gregor Mayrhofer replaced him as conductor in a perfect transmission. Surrounded by the musicians of Het Collectief and the fully committed soloists, he succeeded in conveying all the intensity of this score. Rather than a song of farewell, Das Lied von der Erde carries a song of eternal renewal reflecting Putzi’s gaze.
