The Passion of Matthew is Bach’s greatest work, an unsurpassed climax not only in Protestant church music but also in the history of universal music. After Bach's death, the work was forgotten. On March 11, 1829, a century after the original performance, the piece was performed again in Berlin under the direction of Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. The composer adapted the work to the romantic performance practice, shortened it by one third, employed a huge choir (158 people) and a corresponding orchestra. In view of the great success, the concert was repeated on Bach’s birthday, March 21, which became a major social event, present in the court and the color of the contemporary German intelligentsia. This also started the Bach Renaissance, in a broader sense, the habit of resurrecting older music.
