Tragedy in music in five acts with a prologue by Jean-Baptiste Lully on a libretto by Philippe Quinault. Created at the Royal Palace of Versailles on January 6, 1683

In France, the Opera has always had to do with Power. Its brilliance reflects royal power, and it is no coincidence that lyrical tragedy “à la française” was born at the time of Louis XIV. But someone overshadowed the Sun King: Superintendent Fouquet. He offered the king a sumptuous party at his castle in Vaux. His meteoric rise made the king jealous, who imprisoned the financier who was too sure of his success.

En France, l’Opéra a toujours eu trait au Pouvoir. Son éclat reflète la puissance royale, et ce n’est pas un hasard si la Tragédie lyrique « à la française » naît à l’époque de Louis XIV. Mais quelqu’un a fait de l’ombre au Roi-Soleil : le surintendant Fouquet. Il a offert au roi une fête somptueuse en son château de Vaux. Son ascension fulgurante a rendu jaloux le roi qui fait emprisonner le financier trop assuré de sa réussite.
