Saint-Saëns ist in vielfacher Weise ein Klassizist. Auch in seinem berühmten ersten Cellokonzert spielt die Form und die sinfonische Tradition eine wichtige Rolle – wie bei seiner Schülerin Marie Jaëll. Louise Farrenc hingegen bezieht sich mit ihrer 3. Sinfonie retrospektiv auf die Wiener Klassik und verbindet strukturelle Klarheit mit
romantischer Ausdruckskraft. Den Auftakt macht Berlioz mit seiner Ouvertüre zu »Béatrice et Bénédict«, frei nach dem Shakespeare-Klassiker »Viel Lärm um nichts«.
