He is the first Doge of Genoa and a man of the people: Simon Boccanegra. Only for personal reasons does he agree to take over the office of Doge, because he wants to marry Maria, the daughter of his adversary Jacopo Fiesco. He already has an illegitimate daughter with her, but she seems to have disappeared. As the bells announce his election as Doge, the unfortunate Simon Boccanegra learns of the death of his beloved Maria.

25 years later, Boccanegra is still in power and fighting for Italian unity. When he is supposed to ask for the hand of Amelia Grimaldi for the courtier Paolo, Boccanegra recognizes her as his long-lost daughter. She is already in love with the nobleman Gabriele Adorno. When Boccanegra knocks out Paolo's hand, he swears bitter revenge...

With "Simon Boccanegra", Giuseppe Verdi not only created a spectacular drama full of scenic contrasts and stirring music, but also a historically inspired political thriller that still shows us today how democracy is created - sometimes against and sometimes with the will of the people. Like “Il trovatore” before it, “Simon Boccanegra” is based on a drama by the Spaniard Antonio García Gutiérrez, which Francesco Maria Piave transformed into a libretto based on a prose sketch by Verdi. However, the premiere in 1857 at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice was not very successful. More than 20 years had to pass before Giuseppe Verdi made his breakthrough with "Simon Boccanegra". Together with the new librettist Arrigo Boito, Verdi created a revised version that was performed at the Teatro alla Scala in 1881.

After the FAUST-nominated productions "Lohengrin" and "Der Freischütz", the successful director Tatjana Gürbaca at the Aalto-Theater is now devoting herself to Verdi's gripping and dark music drama and shows the outsider Boccanegra, who is increasingly lost in the midst of the labyrinthine power imbalance.

Er ist der erste Doge Genuas und ein Mann des Volkes: Simon Boccanegra. Einzig aus privaten Gründen willigt er ein, das Amt des Dogen zu übernehmen, denn er möchte Maria, die Tochter seines Widersachers Jacopo Fiesco, heiraten. Mit ihr hat er bereits eine uneheliche Tochter, die allerdings verschwunden scheint. Als die Glocken seine Wahl zum Dogen verkünden, erfährt der unglückliche Simon Boccanegra vom Tod seiner Geliebten Maria.

25 Jahre später ist Boccanegra noch immer an der Macht und kämpft für die Einheit Italiens. Als er für den Höfling Paolo um die Hand Amelia Grimaldis anhalten soll, erkennt Boccanegra in ihr seine verloren geglaubte Tochter. Diese ist bereits in den Adligen Gabriele Adorno verliebt. Als Boccanegra Paolo ihre Hand ausschlägt, schwört dieser bittere Rache …

Mit „Simon Boccanegra“ schuf Giuseppe Verdi nicht nur ein spektakuläres Drama voller szenischer Kontraste und aufwühlender Musik, sondern gleichzeitig einen historisch inspirierten Politkrimi, der uns noch heute vor Augen führt, wie Demokratie entsteht – manchmal gegen und manchmal mit dem Willen des Volkes. Wie schon „Il trovatore“ basiert „Simon Boccanegra“ auf einem Drama des Spaniers Antonio García Gutiérrez, das Francesco Maria Piave nach einer Prosaskizze Verdis in ein Libretto verwandelte. Die Uraufführung 1857 am Teatro la Fenice in Venedig war jedoch wenig erfolgreich. Über 20 Jahre mussten vergehen, ehe Giuseppe Verdi mit „Simon Boccanegra“ der Durchbruch gelang. Gemeinsam mit dem neuen Librettisten Arrigo Boito schuf Verdi eine überarbeitete Fassung, die 1881 am Teatro alla Scala zur Aufführung kam.
