A veritable opus metaphysicum of Western culture, the St. Matthew Passion constitutes an extreme dramatic and musical experience, where the art of the "Cantor of Leipzig" reaches its peak of harmonic density and spiritual depth.

All superlatives are in order to qualify this overwhelming drama of the Passion, whose dramatic springs rival those of any opera and in which Bach is, in the words of André Suarès, the "Nightingale of the Cross". . Thanks to two main parts, the sung account of the last works of Christ by the Evangelist is punctuated by large chorales (some of which are due to Luther), vast choirs (including the unforgettable Overture), and moving Arias, the most famous of which, “  Erbame dich, mein Gott  ” evokes the tears of Saint-Pierre after the denial.
