Nouvelle production du chef-d’œuvre de Purcell, cette Fairy Queen fait le pari de la jeunesse… et de l’inventivité, pour un spectacle total !

Dans une forêt enchantée, le réel se mêle au rêve, à l’illusion et au surnaturel, alors que se croisent les chemins et les intrigues amoureuses de jeunes athéniens, de fées sylvestres… et d’une troupe de comédiens.

Inspiré du Songe d’une nuit d’été, The Fairy Queen puise dans la comédie de Shakespeare la matière d’une fable féérique et drôle, qui plus de 300 ans après sa création ne cesse d’émerveiller. Donné pour la première fois à Londres en 1692, tout juste trois ans avant le décès prématuré de Purcell à l’âge de 35 ans, ce semi-opéra est l’œuvre d’un jeune prodige. On y retrouve quelques-uns des plus beaux airs jamais composés par lui – tel que le très poignant « O let me weep » ou le sémillant « Thrice happy lovers » – où son art du contrepoint et son sens du théâtre prennent leur pleine mesure.

C’est précisément ce brio, cette énergie et cette jeunesse que cette nouvelle production se propose de donner à voir et à entendre. Menée par Paul Agnew et William Christie, aux côtés du chorégraphe Mourad Merzouki – qui signe ici sa première collaboration pour un opéra – cette Fairy Queen sera l’occasion de découvrir les nouveaux lauréats du Jardin des Voix, l’académie pour jeunes chanteurs des Arts Florissants. Ces huit solistes, sélectionnés dans le monde entier et qui déjà attirent sur eux les regards de la planète baroque, incarneront tour à tour l’ensemble des personnages de cette joyeuse fable, aux côtés des danseurs contemporains de la compagnie Käfig.

De quoi concocter une expérience lyrique totale, résolument jeune et nouvelle, où l’art d’hier rencontre celui d’aujourd’hui pour le plus grand plaisir des sens !

A new production of Purcell's masterpiece, this Fairy Queen takes the gamble of youth and inventiveness, for a spectacular show!

In an enchanted forest, reality mixes with dreams, illusion and the supernatural, as the amorous paths and intrigues of young Athenians, woodland fairies and a troupe of actors cross.

Inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream, The Fairy Queen draws on Shakespeare's comedy to create a funny and enchanting fairy tale that continues to amaze more than 300 years after its creation. First performed in London in 1692, just three years before Purcell's untimely death at the age of 35, this semi-opera is the work of a young prodigy. It contains some of the most beautiful arias he ever composed - such as the very poignant "O let me weep" or the lively "Thrice happy lovers" - in which his art of counterpoint and his sense of theater are fully displayed.

It is precisely this brilliance, this energy and this youthfulness that this new production intends to show. Led by Paul Agnew and William Christie, alongside choreographer Mourad Merzouki - who is making his first opera contribution - this Fairy Queen will be an opportunity to discover the new laureates of the Jardin des Voix, the academy for young singers of Les Arts Florissants. These eight soloists, selected from all over the world and already attracting the attention of the baroque community, will take turns embodying all the characters in this joyous fable, alongside contemporary dancers from the Käfig company.

A total lyrical experience, decidedly young and new, where yesterday's art meets today's for the greatest pleasure of all senses!
