Dark comedy over zangers die niets te zeggen hebben
I always feel very uncomfortable in the Final Scene.
But what can we do?
That is the way the opera is written.
We have no control over such things.

Geïnspireerd door het meta-theater van Luigi Pirandello schreef componist Tom Johnson een stuk voor een groep zangers die slechts vier noten tot hun beschikking hebben (A, B, D en E) en over niets anders kunnen zingen dan de opera waar ze op dat moment zelf in staan. Natuurlijk is die situatie onhoudbaar: de opera eindigt in totale verstarring.

Vijftig jaar geleden was de Four Note Opera een plagerig commentaar op de conventies van de operawereld. Hoe zit dat vandaag de dag? Is het stuk zelf sleets repertoire geworden, of is de kritiek nog steeds relevant? Want hoeveel controle hebben zangers van nu eigenlijk over de rollen die ze zingen? En hoeveel zeggenschap hebben operamakers over hun eigen creatieproces?

Inspired by Luigi Pirandello’s meta-theatre, composer Tom Johnson wrote a piece for a group of singers who have only four notes at their disposal (A, B, D and E) and couldn’t sing about anything other than the opera they are now performing in. Of course, such is an impossible situation: the opera ends in utter rigidity.
