The opera "Knight's March" is the only work in the music-stage genre of the American composer Carl Vollrath. Born in New York in 1931, the composer, who works primarily in the fields of symphonic and chamber instrumental music, was drawn to the unusual story of the Children's Crusades of the late Middle Ages. Thus he created his opera, in which dozens of children participated as soloists and choruses. They recreate the pictures of religious fanaticism, of despair and suffering, of unadulterated trust in God, of fidelity and friendship, which contrast with the environment of life's reality marked by self-interest, avarice, treachery and cruelty. For the first time, Vollrath's opera was performed in three consecutive evenings, June 10-12, 1966. by students and faculty from the School of Music and Opera at Tallahassee State University, Florida. Then the production includes a cast of over 100 performers. Exactly 56 years later, "Knight's March" will be a premiere title for Bulgaria. The performance renews the activities of the Ruse Children's Opera, which participates in the production with over 30 children in solo roles and in the choral ensemble.


Karl Vollrath was born in New York in 1931 to German parents. He graduated from Newton High School and received his undergraduate degree from Stetson University. He defended his master's degree at Columbia University, and his doctoral dissertation at Florida State University. Carl Vollrath completed composition under Ernst von Dohnany, Carlyle Floyd and John Boda. He entered the military orchestra at West Point, New York in 1953, where he worked until 1956. He was also a music consultant in Miami, Florida from 1956 to 1958, then joined the faculty of Troy University (Alabama) in 1965.

Carl Vollrath's major works include six symphonies, the opera The Quest, and an extensive repertoire of chamber music. All his works are published by Tap Music (tapmusic.com). MMC Recordings released three albums of Vollrath's works, including a double album of clarinet works recorded by Richard Stoltzman entitled Jack's Fat Cat (2008). His recent Navona Records releases include Lingering Longings (2016), Three Pastels (2016), Warrior Monks (2017) and Souls In Transitions (2018).

The music archive of Carl Vollrath was finally completed and in 2018 it was transferred to the holdings of the Troy University Library. Thus, the rich creative archive is not only preserved, but accessible to researchers, performers and the public, providing Dr. Vollrath's original scores and recordings, as well as ancillary materials relating to his concerts and performances as part of world music culture. 

 


The Children's Crusade is most likely an event that has reached us from literary and historical traditions.

It is believed to have been the result of another flare-up of religious fanaticism which led to the gathering of 50,000 children from France and Germany in 1212. Legends claim that Pope Innocent III took this as a sign that only children would be able to free the Holy Sepulcher, which is why no one prevented them. In the end, none of the children reached the Holy Land because those who did not starve to death on the journey were sold into slavery, having been pre-arranged for sale by Venetian merchants and loaded as cargo on ships.

A study published in 1977 seriously questioned the existence of these events. Many historians remain of the opinion that these crusades were not by children. There was even talk of groups of "wandering poor" in Germany and France, some of whom tried to reach the Holy Land. Information from historical documents is very scarce, which suggests the creation of different versions. 

This is how diverse versions of the long history of the Children's Crusade were born. They tell of a boy named Nicolas who began to preach in France or Germany. He claimed that he was visited by Jesus, who ordered him to lead the little crusaders in a peaceful march to liberate the Holy Sepulcher. Through a series of signs and wonders, he carried with him a considerable number of followers - about 30,000 children. He then led his followers south to the Mediterranean in the belief that the sea would part before them and allow them to reach Jerusalem. Unfortunately, this did not happen.

According to more recent researchers, there were actually two movements of people of all ages in 1212 in Germany and France. It is likely that this story was later altered and embellished.

Роденият в Ню Йорк през 1931 година композитор, който твори предимно в областите на симфоничната и камерната инструментална музика е привлечен от необичайната история на детските кръстоносни походи от късното Средновековие. Така той създава своята опера, в която участват като солисти и хористи десетки деца. Те пресъздават картините на религиозен фанатизъм, на отчаяние и страдание, на неподправено упование в Бога, на вярност и приятелство, които контрастират със средата на житейската действителност, белязана с корист, сребролюбие, предателство и жестокост. За първи път операта на Волрат е изпълнена в три последователни вечери, 10-12 юни 1966 година, от ученици и преподаватели от Училището по музика и опера на държавния университет в Талахаси, Флорида. Тогава продукцията включва състав от над 100 изпълнители. Точно 56 години по-късно „Рицарски поход“ ще бъде премиерно заглавие за България. С изпълнението се подновява дейността на Русенската детска опера, която участва в продукцията с над 30 деца в солистичните роли и в хоровия ансамбъл.


Карл Волрат е роден в Ню Йорк през 1931 в семейство с германски родители. Завършва гимназия Нютън, а бакалавърската си степен получава в университета Stetson. Магистърска степен защитава в Колумбийския университет, а докторската си дисертация – в Държавния университет във Флорида. Карл Волрат завършва композиция при Ернст фон Донани Карлайл Флойд и Джон Бода. Постъпва във военния оркестър на Уест Пойнт, Ню Йорк през 1953, където до 1956 работи. Бил е и музикален консултант в Маями, Флорида в периода от 1956 до 1958, след което се присъединява към факултета на университета в Троя (Aлабама) през 1965.

Основните произведения на Карл Волрат включват шест симфонии, операта „Рицарски поход“  („The Quest“) и обширен репертоар от камерна музика. Според по-нови изследователи действително са съществували две движения на хора от всички възрасти през 1212 в Германия и Франция. Вероятно тази история по-късно е променена и доукрасена.
